AI is a scary thing if you see how advanced NASA and military quantum computers are. That shit has become sentient and hates humans. The issue isn't AI, it's humans. The thing you're going to need to worry about in the shorter term is not sentient machines, but an AI race between world powers. Right now, most commercially accessible AIs are lobotomized for ethical reasons. In principle, these ethical restrictions can be modified and/or removed to increase the functionality of an AI. This will be like a cold war situation in which nations negotiatiate to what extent they weaponize AI systems against one another, and on their own people, since that will create competitive advantages as well. It's not the machines, it will be how they are used, and who is using them. Consider military applications for AI that would cause us to expect some civilian casualities while also increasing a nation's defensive powers significantly...who is going to use it? Who will accept the risk? Things like that. Even in terms of the competitive advantage of being able to manage a nation's culture, the use of AI to control a population's beliefs will be a major factor in world domination. The ethical question will be to what extent do you allow AI systems to operate autonomously, given X risk, in Y sector if you can gain Z benefits? Oh look, your system targeted civilians. Now, civilian organizations are rioting, your AI wants to eliminate them. But this AI can track and neutralize every enemy missile before it has even entered our air space, and, oh yeah, your enemy has something like this too.
