TL;DR - I skimmed the book (all three parts) and IT IS NOT FOR KIDS. "pink" handing this out at her concert should be considered a criminal act. The book isn't as perverted as people are making it seem. But it's a crazy deep dive in to a side of mental illness to which kids should not be introduced.

Okay, so out of curiosity, I took at look at this book "gender queer" being given out. I wanted to see just how perverted and prurient it really is. By the way, it turns out you can view it for free online. And there are three parts.

Oh - and it's actually not really perverse or prurient. But it is DEFINITELY NOT FOR KIDS. I can't stress that enough.

"gender queer" is an incredible and highly detailed deep, deep dive in to mental illness. Really. I didn't read much of it, and really you don't need to as it's pretty much a comic. And wow is it dripping with mental illness. It's the autobiographical tale of some girl who fantasizes about being a boy and just cannot deal with her own neuroses. What's really, truly disgusting in this book is how it shows that people with such extreme mental illness and "issues" seem to be taken seriously as though they're perfectly healthy.

Now, let me pause just a moment here. We all should know that mental illness is both a sliding scale and really nothing to be joked about. It's sad and a lot of people have genuine problems. We all should also know that a lot of young kids go through short stages during which they experiment with thoughts of being the other gender. That's actually pretty normal and doesn't usually last long. It may not even be evident in a lot of kids, but it's generally there.

All that said, the author of this book really needs help. She - it - whatever, is a textbook example of the mental illness which is overtaking our society. Some most notable evidence for this is the author's inability to accept its own body and handle some of the more technical and unpleasant things which go along with it. We all have bodies and both genders have to suffer some uncomfortable or painful things at times. (Ladies, we all know what you go through and you have our genuine condolences. But before you think you have it SO MUCH WORSE than guys, try getting a hernia or prostate exam. Or - for that matter - dealing with testicle issues and injuries.)

If I were a doctor with a high-end medical degree, I would absolutely diagnose this author as "Fucked Up". The author is clearly using its talents as a writer and artist to deal with its mental problems. Hey - that's great. Everyone needs an outlet. And writing and creating can be cathartic. BUT THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR KIDS. If anything, this book encourages kids to indulge in the mentally ill fantasies of people who are in serious need of help.
