The narrative that FDR sold the goys back then was that he had secret messages from Adolf Hitler saying that he was a direct threat to the US because he had a secret plan to invade the US from bases he would establish in Mexico.

Anybody even half awake would have looked at a globe and said:
"WTF? That makes absolutely no goddamm sense whatsoever. Germany hasn't got the navy for that, and nowhere near the sealift capacity to support a land invasion of the US through Mexico. And I guess we'd all just look aside when the supply ships go past Florida on their way into the Gulf of Mexico? Or is he going to go the long way around and do it across the Pacific?"
