they're leaving the us to hold the bag because the entire plan has always been to destroy the us and take down all western nations with it.

Yeah at some point the willingness to fight war dies out, on all sides. You rarely destroy the entire enemy. The war hasn't been exactly popular at home in Russia. Ukrainians from Kiev had a big attitude about it.
