Actually it's a proud and long tradition. Kellogg and then later Post were both 'Heath Foods' made expressly for the purpose of improving your bowel movements. Corn Flakes was the original "you need more fiber in your diet" product. As an alternate to cooked oats, which was a meal staple back then due to it being cheap and readily available, it sounds comical now.

But it is hard to believe that the breakfast cereal industry, which is essentially devoted to selling candy as a meal for children, started as serious, earnest attempts to have people eat healthier so that they would feel better.
