Seriously though, it wasn't until I joined the army and left home that I met any male over the age of nine that didn't have some kind of knife on him all the time. It was just expected, like wearing pants or a watch.
IIRC, in Japan the maximum blade length for a pocket knife when I was there was only 2.5" (I thought that was kinda funny in the land of the samurai).
One more point. Buy "good enough" but don't spend a lot of money on something you might have to ditch. Don't spend hundreds of dollars on some custom piece that you may have to toss, or may get confiscated and you'll never get it back anyway.
Do not get a non-locking knife. My finger still scarred from teh time I went for a dudes heart in a fast moving fight, my knife caught his rib and fucking folded on my finger. Pretty significant cut although it was his buddys 40 ounce bottle to my head coming in from the side that took me out that time.
Get something that folds, but has an assisted opening so you can easily and quickly flip the blade out quickly one handed. Try a bunch out in a knife shop and get one you like. Also, remember that in a knife fight where you have 2 fighters, there is rarely a winner. It's not uncommon to have 2 losers. GTFO as fast as you can if it's knife on knife situation and you can outrun the situation.

Unless you have received actual training on the proper use of a bayonet that is a pretty poor choice. Bayonet combat is an actual skill that needs to be practiced.
And any man who has been trained in the proper use of the bayonet is a man NOT to be taken lightly.
Looking another man in the face while stabbing him through the guts with cold steel is no easy thing. If a man has already prepared himself physically, mentally and emotionally to do that, there remains very little else he would NOT do. It instills a spirit of aggression. That is why it is still taught.
Bayonets are a brutal weapon in the hands of a trained individual, and yes bayonet training is a great way to prepare individuals for the brutality of combat.
Cjrb 4 inch flipper. 38 bucks, good steel, one handed open and close. G-10 grips. 10/10. I carried a buck 110 for 6 years and regret not getting a modern knife sooner.
If you are in an extremely non-free state -- they are all non-free now -- carry a box cutter. Just as sharp, usually sharper, and plausible deniability.
Okay, okay. Knives. Ka-bars are about as good as it gets for a general utility fighting knife. Buck 119s can be used similarly if you wrap the grip. Stiletos are decent for pocket, but can become egregiously expensive for a quality example. The S&W H.R.T. boot knife is also a good option; very affordable.
Firearms only grant you the benefit of range. At arms length, your gun becomes our gun.
(I used to think the same as you, until I watched a Filipino fella turn a leather heavy bag to tatters, cutting it over 70 times in just a few seconds. The funny part was that he never repeated any of his techniques.)
Stop the cap. Plenty of real life examples show that the time it takes for someone (inlc law enforcement) to draw and get shots on target is greater than an individual pulling a knife and closing 10-12 ft before fatally plunging it into the victim. Basically if you can have a face to face convo with someone without having to raise your voice - you're in range.
And when that distance is closer than arms length? Don't bother telling me all the wonderful john-wick-style shit you're just certain you'd execute perfectly, because I've got news for you. It won't go anything like that. It never does.
I've had to go "hands on" twice to resolve shit due to close chance contact that happened way too fast and way too close for either of me or the other guy to raise our long guns, and I can tell you that you aren't always going to get to choose. In combat, the enemy gets a vote too and sometimes shit just happens. And when happens, it's faster than most people would believe. You know what will stop it? A knife in the neck. 2-3 seconds and it's over and you either won, or you got the award for second place.
I've done 4 tours Mr Hadassah. I'm sure you vastly superior to trucking around a sand box full of 6 foot snack bars with weapons of several varieties. I will ABOSOLUTLY GUARANTEE in a street scene you engaging me would end well for you if you have not prepared your final resting location. Movies and keyboards never lasted once a door was kicked in.
To hard to get/keep ammo. Very expensive caliber to practice with. Most 40 shooters suck outside of six to ten feet range.(worthless) but hey they own the gun right........
You aren't the majority fuck face so deflate your fractured life position. 45-70 is not 40,45. I'm paying cash for 1000 rds of 22 jet,I'm sure your just swimming in it

Seriously though, it wasn't until I joined the army and left home that I met any male over the age of nine that didn't have some kind of knife on him all the time. It was just expected, like wearing pants or a watch.
Training is the key though. Lots of systems out there. Pick one and work at it. By the time you're competent enough to know the difference, you can start looking around at other systems.
Over the years, I studied both of these:

you dont need much of a knife to cut an artery. learn a bit about where arteries are.
under the axles, the throat, the hip, the inside of the upper leg, the wrist and so on.
if you cut/stab to kill...
if you cut to incapacitate, cut the inside of the hand. if those sinews are cut, he cant grab you or a knife anymore.
but usually stabbing is more effective at killing. a sharpened slit-screwdriver does everything you need. five quick stabs to the heart, and hes out.
watch the movie "black hat" if you want to see a perfect depiction of how to prepare for and win a knife fight. (its at the end of the movie)

Legal blade length and type may be regulated where you are. Used properly, you can kill just about anyone with only a 4" blade.
Some places let you carry whatever you want as long as it's in a belt sheath in plain view. Know the law in your area.
There's even a discrete class of carry knives called "neck knives" because you can carry them on a chain, strap or cord hanging around your neck.

Legally you have to check, some places limit the blade length or require it to be folding.
Also carbonized iron steel is helpful for making sparks avoid the mostly chromium stainless steel.
