Our biggest paper denomination, the $100 note, can't even buy a week of groceries anymore. It's been in circulation since the 1800's too, and became a bank note right before WW1 when the country was sold to a private bank. Back then it was a lot of money. When I was a kid you could by a used car for just a few of these bills. You could count them by hand. Now you need a counting machine. If there was a single politician who cared about us he'd push for a $1000 paper bill. But there isn't one.

Hopefully, no one will ever want to buy something that they wouldn't want the government to know about.

And, hopefully, no one will ever want to give a cash gift to someone else without the government knowing about it.

Of the big four in Aus (Commonwealth Bank, Westpac, NAB and ANZ), all except Westpac were adopting a CBDC plan to roll out as early as 2025.
Keeping bank branches open also costs them labour in staff manning the venue and the money kept on premises.
Already local bank policies dictate that new customers cannot maintain more than 1 card per account. So you are typically forced into adopting a VISA not a VISA and Eftpos card and will subsequently carry a 1.4%-2.5% interchange/merchant fee 0.14% assessment fee. These fee are passed on to the consumer.

Every time you swipe out of convenience the international bankers are making a nominal % profit off your transaction.
This is a disgusting practice.
Even I have started going back to cash where practicable for at least weekly food shopping, its cheaper and its better to budget.

• CBDC is unfortunately coming whether you like it or not.
• Cash doesn't have a surcharge at the point of sale.

We'll see. It might get here, but they aren't ready for what comes next.
