Can anyone think of a way I can control my computer (without installing software on it) from another laptop? I need to control the mouse and keyboard and probably hear the speakers and use the microphone. I might be able to get away without needing the speakers and mic.
I can't exactly have someone tend the laptop for me because the work I'm doing can get complicated and it requires semi-fast to fast responses to things, and if someone tries calling me and I don't have control of the mouse and keyboard it's going to be obvious that something is wrong.
We don't get sick days because they said that's what our extra PTO hours are supposed to be used for.
Is there a keyboard with a touchpad that connects to the internet that I can plug into the laptop and control remotely? (I think I just blew people's minds here and probably changed the course of remote work as we know it with this idea, but whatever)
You can tunnel VNC sessions through SSH; it has been about forever since I did that, but it is a thing that can be done. It was really laggy via T1, though. So there's that. But it got the job done, sort of.
This is about the best option for trying to do it in a secure manner yourself for free. OP, you'd also need to make sure you open up the correct port on your router/firewall. You could also do RDP but I'd make sure to at least configure it to work on a non-standard port and then disable it as soon as you're home again.
If you're not very technically-minded for these sorts of things and you just need to get it done in a hurry, you can sign up for something like gotomypc.com - I have a family member that uses that and it seems fine, but you'd be putting a bit of your trust in them.
One other thing to note, if you do manage to get something working, make sure you leave that laptop on and open. Disable any sort of power-saving/sleep/hibernation settings (particularly anything that suspends the hard drive or network connection). Otherwise you won't be able to remotely access and control it.

They say that it's easier to ask forgiveness than to ask permission. I've done this a few times and it's almost true. Once, I quit a job as they would not give me the time off I wanted. I publicly told them: "I'm quiting today. I'll be back in 2 days if you want to hire me back full time, and I hope you do because I like ya'll and I like working here. If you don't, I understand, but I need some time off like I told ya".
We all laughed about it when I was rehired shortly after my "sojourn". However, I reiterated the point that as much as I love the company and the job, and tried to be the best employee they ever had, I would not have asked for the time off if it was not important to me.
I never had any issues going forward with anything I wanted.
Just do what you want to do, fuck them. What are they going to do, fire you? You can get a new job. Getting a new job ain't some once in a lifetime shit.
Windows Remote Desktop should be built in. Not an expert, but I think you just need to ensure permissions and enable remote log in on the target laptop.
Problem with that method is that it can be difficult to get on to a pc that's on a different network especially if you're going cell phone network to home ip. Same network it is almost instant. Otherwise you end up having to do the static ip and home domain route which can be a cunt to set up.
Without installing software - not really, otherwise NoMachine would work very well just with a port forwarded to it.
You have quite the strict set of constraints there, basically you need the type of full remote hardware KVM used for servers, where you can see the boot process and access the BIOS menu remotely. Obviously you don't need the latter feature, but the point is having full remote KVM without any OS dependency or knowing/caring what software/services are installed.
That sounds like a bit more wiring/hardware than just a raspberry pi, but I imagine it working if the basic idea is a USB input implementation on the micro side commanded via remote access app on the OS side.
Without that prepared and with just a week remaining, I can only think of forwarding a port for basic remote access. Not sure if RDP does mic/audio, although if the no-software rule is flexible then NoMachine does.
TeamViewer is gay, although AnyDesk is slightly less gay and could be worth trying. Either are poor opsec though, basically revealing your system to a third party for lack of owning your own relay.
My brother used to be a higher up at the Dept of Energy and once traveled to China. The Chinese broke into his room and downloaded his computer right after he'd stepped out of his room. It can be done Hobama. Fortunately, he'd received a pre-briefing and had been told to not have anything on his laptop and was expecting it.

Take the fuckin' sick day. Forgiveness is easier to get than permission and being sick is easier to forgive than fraud.
