The big white Z was painted on there so the Russians wouldn't accidentally shoot each other, instead of the Ukrainians who are using a lot of the same equipment.
Imagine the USA in a new civil war. Both sides are driving the same kind of trucks and tanks, painted exactly (or very close to) the same. How do you tell who is the enemy or not in certain situations? Slap some kind of easily identifiable marking on your guys.
