Mine just crapped out. Was gonna just leave it in bypass and not replace, but took a shower and can definitely feel the difference without the softener. Any recommendations for new ones? Morton? Culligan? Others?
To soften water, you may try a sponge. Put water in, squeeze, let it go back into the bottle/tank. Now, be aware, water is (ideally, if you plan on drinking it) in a liquid state. It can't necessarily get much softer.
If however you are posting this from the poles and are trying to soften up the ice to acquire drinking water, I suggest two potential methods:
1: Apply heat to the ice.
2: Fuck the iceberg. The heat generated will result in some small amount of water. Be careful of bodily fluids. That would be... Unfortunate. However in a survival situation one must do what they must do. Piss on a machine gun, consume the danger noodles, defecate in the woods and clean up with some leaves... Generally unpleasant things to do for modern or more modest individuals.
Metering is more efficient with salt than timed. But since metering might run at any time of day there are two-tank softeners that keep giving soft water while they regen. A name brand two tank metering softener is the top. Bottom is the no-name timed single tank from Amazon.
I've seen versions of that on Amazon with decent reviews. Seems to only work for short distances, so if you have long pipes the effect wears off towards the end.

This worked well in Michigan...if I remember correctly Minnesota's groundwater is a bit harder.

It keeps the fine grit out of the softener, hopefully making it last longer.
