Being fit and strong is important in unarmed combat but skill trumps all. A scrawny experienced street-fighter would run rings around some of these gym junkies and their bulging muscles.
If you want to beat the shit out of a man, practice hitting. Pushups won't do shit when you roll your wrist and hurt yourself because you didn't know how to throw a punch
You should definitely get big and strong but you can be both of those and suck at fighting.
You want practical fighting skills quickly then join a boxing gym and get some lessons. Some of the other stuff like jujitsu might be alright too but boxing for sure covers solid fundamentals.
While I was in jail and healing, I started at 20 push-ups per day. Each day I increased by 10. I did this every day for a couple months. Think I got to 830 (not all in one go). Then my shoulder started hurting and I eventually stopped doing them. Maybe I should have taken a day off every week.
Old quote from Arnold when asked about 'rest day'. "Where is the rest muscle?" I stay fit because it makes doing anything physical easier. I don't want to be on TV during a disaster sitting on my porch waiting for someone to come and rescue me. I'm 72, Vietnam vet, I'm not going hands on with 20-something thugs. Always carry a gun. Martial arts are good to know, but that's really only good for 1 on 1.
Like Neri says above. Lifting and becoming "big", works for blacks but it's an impediment to fighting. I've been in lots of fights and even before I started working on skill I could take muscle bros a foot taller than me (most of the time) out because I'd been in lots of fights and was wrestling. Get yourself into a Brazilian Jujitsu class. Use lifting to balance your muscles that don't get worked out in class. Full contact sparing is the way to get there. Thats it.
Just get some dumbbells and free weights. You don't need a gym. Watching Pumping Iron and note Lou Ferrigno got 3rd place in the Mr Olympia competition just using a home gym comprised of free weights. If he can do that, you do not need a gym to grow some muscle.
professional advice says to do 10 sets per week to failure when failure is between 10-30 reps for hypertrophy. So for example you can do 2 workouts a week about and do 5 sets in them. Also you can superset everything without much loss of effect, the time saved is worth it
Do 3-4 sets of flat pushups (do your wrists a favor and use dumbells for the flat pushups, if you have a couple).
Do 3-4 sets of inclined pushups (you could use a counter, or a chair, or anything that won't break when you do pushups on them). 45 degrees would be the target for your inclined pushup, but at first you can use a wall and not get too inclined until you start building up strength and doing more pushups per set.
Each workout try to do at least one more rep than the last workout on each set, if possible. Some days might be better than others.
Do each set to failure. Workout every other day. You can take off 2 days on the third workout, or continue working out every other day, ad infinitum.

If you're just doing pushups and not also lifting, do however many you can do in a day and still do that many the next day without significant pain.
