Yeah, it's amazing to see that happen. When I was a child I saw one of those crawling up out of the ground. I sat myself down and didn't move until the whole process was over. The little bugger was all wet and sticky looking. It found a spot that it liked and stopped all movement. Then the sticky stuff dried up and became a delicate but hard shell. Then the shell split down it's back and the bug eyed bug came out. The wings were tiny, wet looking, and crumpled up. It started moving it's wings. They grew and grew until they were twice as long as the bug! It flew away and I kept the shell.

Those green guys are nasty and tore my tomato palnts to shreds. Pulled them off daily and squashed them, but next day there were more, all summer long.
Had the same problem with them on sweetcorn one year. Would gather them in a metal bucket and fry them with gasoline. Ended up using sevin dust and it killed them off but killed a bunch of bumblebees. Felt guilty.
