Barrier troop sounds like the perfect Ukrainian jew job. It looked more like they fell back to a trench to make a stand. They even pointed in the direction they expected pursuing Russians and were firing. That’s hardly a desertion.

It's relatively unfriendly fire. Barrier troops are anti-retreat forces. You stay on the front until you die. If you try to avoid dying by retreating, both the russians and the barrier troops behind you will try to kill you.

Just saying, friendly fire is generally inadvertent. Barrier troops are intentionally unfrenly to retreating soldiers, and shoot them deliberately.
