People are too pissed off at their employers to stay extra time just because someone else was assigned too much work. It's a big part of why people do this less. It's not between them and their coworker. It's between them and their employer. And after the covid craziness people are all more eager to set boundaries between them and their employer. If you don't plan well, or delegate effectively, or hire correct amount of staff and home time hits, shit breaks fuck it. You shouldn't have muzzled me with a mask if you want me to be sympathetic.

I'm sorry the dude doesn't know how to walk away. "But the circumstances mean he can't walk away." Then the employer can't plan well and their shit should break. Not ask the one guy to be Atlas holding up their stupidity.

There are ways to plan a days needed work being done inside work hours. That's their job. We can't have all the skills. They are supposed to have a few, and that kind of planning is one of them. But they don't have that skill because they have displaced the need for it with manipulating your sense of sympathy. Toward the company, toward your coworker. Then they end up with no tangible skills. Only soft skills. Used to manipulate. Where them having tangle skills would make things better for everyone, and them having soft skill makes things worse for everyone.

Skills like being able to estimate a realistic upper and lower bound it would take to do something, and having contingencies if work is interrupted, or designing a work flow where it doesn't matter.

A little off topic, but I hired a guy (side work for him) to install a vinyl floor. I kind of laughed when he brought his 13 year old daughter to help him. I was amazed to watch this teenage girl bust her ass to carry boxes of flooring up the stairs..for most of the day. (boxes were 45lbs each).

A good work ethic is going to take that kid places.

Two years ago I hired an electrician to install a manual transfer switch, so I could power the house with a generator. He brought a young 'helper', but every time he needed a tool from the truck he had to yell at his helper to put his phone away, and go get what he needed.

I refinished antique wood floors for 12 years. I worked by myself and busted ass to get the last coat of finish on the floor by Friday around noon.

I'd still have between 40-50 hours in.

The owner of the company would want me to go help his pot head cousin who had his druggie brother in law as his helper.

I got more done with higher quality working by myself than these two burnouts.

I'd tell the boss "I didn't bust my ass all week so that I could go finish those assholes job.

It's important to be able to know who a good man is though.

The older i get, the less good men i find.

I used to tell helper's that unless it was NASA or Hollywood calling don't answer your phone.

The problem is that modern people are lazy. When modern people need help it’s because they did not even try to do a good job.
