Set up large pumps over at the ocean connected to the largest hoses they have. As the lava moves closer, spray it to form solid rock. When it fills in behind and begins to spill over, spray that spot again to increase the barrier height.
The lava speed is not in miles per hour, it moves at walking speed. Unless you have no hoses and pumps, should be able to at least block it from the town, if not totally guide it anywhere you wish.
