That's right! It's time for another Friday Night Guitar Thread! If you were expecting something else, you're mistaken. We always have a FNGT!

So, here's something from the deeper archives. This was recorded in VA on some pretty solid kit. The recording was tough, as you need something that sounds like a garage band and a professional studio recording. Still, we managed well enough - I think...

SRV - Tightrope (The Usual Suspects)

That hasn't been shared in quite a while. It's worth hearing again, I think.

We do have a project ongoing, but we're slacking. There's not much snow, but there's enough to keep me busy. Plus, I've been online less which means I've been busy with other activities. For example, I have a bunch of new cars that have been delivered and need to be organized and catalogued.

Anyhow...

Sounds great, but that tone seems like its missing just a little something to match SRV's to a 'T'. I don't know what it is. Your playing just sounds thinner somehow

Yeah, it's not quite perfect. We got it as close as we could, but that song's got something different going on with the recording process and I don't know what it was. Without that information, we couldn't quite replicate it to the same degree we normally do.

That could be it, actually. I usually play some pretty light strings, unless the guitar specifies a specific set.

I can manage that part. The tone was the issue. It's something they did in the studio, I think. I have no idea why.

That was some bad ass rythmn guitar. I don't know how SRV can play and sing that. It went into overdrive when the solo came in. Nice.

Thanks! The rhythm guitar was done by the missus. I'd have played the lead (SRV's portion).

It's hard to disconnect and sing while playing, but it's possible. It requires letting your fingers rely on muscle memory, I think.

Hello again everyone. My buddy Chris stopped by earlier this week to jam some music out and we were trying to think of something to play when my woman said why don't you play a song by Toby Keith since he just passed away. So what the hell.

I think it was in the 2000s, like 2002 or so, when I recall covering the song.

It was a fine song for playing in a bar. Country was pretty popular at the time.

Also, the Super Bowl is on Sunday. I'm going to have to watch that one. I only watched a few games all year but the Niners are in the Bowl so I've got to watch it.

Then again, I usually watch it - even if I didn't watch the rest of the season.

I am optimistic but don't know enough about the Chiefs to say anything. The Niners have a better record, I know that much. But, it's not all that better.

Also, I don't think the Chiefs have ever won a Super Bowl. So, they're going to be motivated. They're going to be VERY motivated. If they pick up momentum, that's going to matter - no matter how good the Niners are on any given Sunday.

So, I'm not making any predictions. I'll be rooting for the Niners, of course. At the same time, it'd be kinda cool if a team won the Super Bowl that had never won before. That'd be pretty neat. There aren't that many teams left that haven't at least won the big game.

LOL That's a start! My go-to is Beethoven's 5th. Gimme 10 minutes and I can play that on pretty much any instrument you hand me. It might not be good, but I can at least figure that much out.

The basics are 5 notes. It's pretty easy.

There's a Christian hymn that uses the same music called Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee (something like that).
