It was called Women's Liberation in the 60s and 70s before the lesbians started pushing with the term Feminism. It was entirely based on the books and personalities of several women, most of them jews, who were affluent and very neurotic. Like all women, they blamed men for whatever they saw wrong with their lives. It wasn't just effeminate men who supported Women's Lib back then, they were a minority, but the majority of those who sought "equal rights" for women were men who saw an injustice and being fair-minded men, the wanted to correct it.

The seeming pay disparity was a complete fiction, but the saturation bombing of propaganda fixed the idea of women receiving 70% of what men make firmly in peoples' heads. Women were restricted from some jobs because they weren't physically or temperamentally qualified to do them. Access to credit was expanded for them even though most wives didn't work, but wanted credit without approval from their husbands.

If you want an idea of what Women's Libbers were like in the 60s, you should read old Robert Crumb comics. He was unabashedly sexist and accurately shows, albeit in comic fashion, how women transformed from decent people into man haters after being exposed to the rhetoric of Women's Lib at rallies and encounter groups.

I think originally husbands were exhausted from working or were too busy doing productive and profitable things to pay much attention to the mad ravings of a woman, and here we are.
