Sand, Foam, Nylon, and etc. would be introduced into a wound with that bullshit on. Anything that gets pushed/pulled into a bullet wound would have to be completely removed for healing to begin, and to prevent a deadly infection(s).

Unless he has modified the life-jacket with plates up front he would still die of the wound infection(s).

A clean "through and through" wound would be much more survivable.

The sand, nylon, and foam would have to be picked, irrigated, or suctioned out to prevent infection. Can you imagine trying to get sand out of the chest cavity of a gunshot wound victim?
