You know what day it is. You know what time it is. If you don't, get with the program! It's time for the Friday Night Guitar Thread, a thread where we celebrate the creation of music regardless of skill level. Join us. We're pretty much a cult!

Once again, it's time for the FNGT!

If you don't know how this works, click this link. That link will take you to another site to give you some additional information and tell you about some of our off-site features. That's also the site where we will host the weekly guitar threads, should upgo go down.

NOTE: That site is by invitation only. If you want an invite, ask a regular participant (such as @Sleazy or myself)

If you already know what's going on, you probably don't need to click any of those links. You can still visit to see if any changes have been made, as that's also where we kept the archives and have a second forum.

By the way, we're down to just two of us. If you want to help, let us know.

That's right! It's time for another Friday Night Guitar Thread! We do this every week, so you are probably already aware of this.

I don't have anything new this week - but I'm now motivated for next week. It's just going to take some work. I'd explain, but that'll ruin the surprise. Also, I'm not sure how well the song will go over, but that's not something that usually bothers me. We generally record what we want and don't really give a shit if you don't like it.

This week, I will share something that's pretty special. This was recorded in a real studio, among real friends. The studio was packed with great musicians, many of whom have been friends for a whole lot of years. I'm told that we can do the same the next time I happen to be driving through the area.

GnR - November Rain (with loads of friends)

It's a great song that's also great as an instrumental. One of these days I may get bored and add the vocals. The timing should be pretty spot on, making that a fairly easy task.

I plugged that into the amp and cranked it. woo hoo!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 1.2 yearsFeb 23, 2024 20:38:17 ago (+5/-0)

Sweet! It's a great song. I'd say it's GnR's magnum opus.

The lyrics are a little weak, but they're fine. There's still a story being told, especially when coupled with the video. So, in combination, they're a fantastic thing. Many artists never reach that level.

songs that start slow and end up rocking out are epic

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 4 points 1.2 yearsFeb 23, 2024 21:24:30 ago (+4/-0)

I love the intro. In concert, he tends to do the opening piano piece and then sing the rest - handing the keys off to the regular keyboard player.

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 1.2 yearsFeb 23, 2024 21:54:19 ago (+3/-0)

I never got to see them in concert

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 1.2 yearsFeb 23, 2024 23:53:32 ago (+3/-0)

They're playing again but don't appear to have the same energy that they once had.

I closed my eyes and fell asleep. I'm not sure how that happened. [

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 1.2 yearsFeb 24, 2024 00:59:10 ago (+3/-0)

Did you take the sleeping pills? LoL

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 1.2 yearsFeb 24, 2024 15:07:39 ago (+1/-0)

I took them right on time. They wouldn't have even kicked in by that point.

I guess my body just wanted sleep.

Must have been tired. All that rummaging through the attic

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler 5 points 1.2 yearsFeb 23, 2024 21:51:57 ago (+5/-0)

Did a cover of Pancho and Lefty kinda drunk and stoned other night. It's awesomely terrible

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 1.2 yearsFeb 23, 2024 22:10:19 ago (+2/-0)

You sound pretty drunk, which makes it awesome! Hell yeah!

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler 4 points 1.2 yearsFeb 23, 2024 22:15:55 ago (+4/-0)

Slainte. I'm going sober again. Well maybe I'll go back to toking, but I don't like it regularly

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 1.2 yearsFeb 23, 2024 23:23:15 ago (+2/-0)

I like to drink socially, which is maybe twice a week. I ain't no alcoholic, but I do enjoy being drunk occasionally

I smoke weed every day

your playing and singing perked my womans ears right up and she hung on every word

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler 3 points 1.2 yearsFeb 23, 2024 23:45:42 ago (+3/-0)

Hook me up with her sister or cousin. I haven't been drinking heavily or regularly lately. Quit for a good few months

[ - ] Sleazy 2 points 1.2 yearsFeb 23, 2024 23:48:19 ago (+2/-0)

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler 1 point 1.2 yearsFeb 24, 2024 15:34:03 ago (+1/-0)

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 0 points 1.2 yearsFeb 24, 2024 18:30:00 ago (+0/-0)

I am kinda old but I'm not quite a hippie. I'm not afraid of working for a living!

[ - ] popticalillusion 0 points 1.2 yearsFeb 25, 2024 13:04:00 ago (+0/-0)

I really like it! It has a good vibe going with the drinking too.

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler 0 points 1.2 yearsFeb 25, 2024 14:15:15 ago (+0/-0)

Thanks. Imma try for some sober covers if you have any requests

[ - ] Sleazy 5 points 1.2 yearsFeb 23, 2024 20:12:24 ago (+5/-0)

Hello. I dont have anything new, I been working on some new riffs but they aint ready yet.

here's one me and my buddy Chris did some time back, man of constant sorrow

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 1.2 yearsFeb 23, 2024 20:41:51 ago (+5/-0)

I've listened to your rendition of that in the past. I think the best version is the version that came with the movie, "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?" It's actually a solid movie for the most part. The ending is a bit weak and not something that'd ever happen in real life, but I suppose it could have in an informal system such as they had in the era.

It's a movie I've seen and one that I've enjoyed.

On the other hand, the song has an interesting history. Rather than recount it here, I'll simply link to the Wikipedia article about the song:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_of_Constant_Sorrow

It was the perfect song for the film and the actors covered it perfectly. It's pretty much the best version of that song out there, though I've heard a female rendition that didn't displease me.

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 1.2 yearsFeb 23, 2024 20:45:47 ago (+4/-0)

I thought that movie was entertaining.

And I thought Chris sang it well.

One of Verle's girlfriends that passed away a few years ago, great, great uncle or something like that was supposedly the one who wrote that song

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 5 points 1.2 yearsFeb 23, 2024 20:50:42 ago (+5/-0)

That's an interesting connection to the song. It's interesting how we tie ourselves to music, how we relate to it and remember things about it.

[ - ] Sleazy 4 points 1.2 yearsFeb 23, 2024 21:02:16 ago (+4/-0)

Yeah it was hard to believe and she told us his name and we found it online connected to him

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 4 points 1.2 yearsFeb 23, 2024 21:23:44 ago (+4/-0)

Huh... She might have been telling the truth! Who knows? It's not like we're gonna go dig her up and do a DNA test.

[ - ] Sleazy 3 points 1.2 yearsFeb 23, 2024 21:27:16 ago (+3/-0)

I do have a song that features her singing!

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 3 points 1.2 yearsFeb 23, 2024 23:51:52 ago (+3/-0)

I fell asleep.

looks just like a guitar i bought for 20 bucks at a party at Verles house years ago, i pawned it for 100 lol

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 1.2 yearsFeb 24, 2024 15:05:20 ago (+1/-0)

It looks like one of the many nameless '70s guitars from Japan. If you dig deep enough to check the wiring, look for date codes on the pots.

Warmoth makes good stuff. You should be fine if it's built with their parts.

Obviously, age is not always kind to a guitar. You're aware of how to do a proper setup, I assume?

I seldom do my own work these days. I have a luthier who is pretty much on the payroll. I rotate guitars in and out and send them to him to be inspected, cleaned, and set up - if needed. He knows what I expect. It's just another bill, as far as I'm concerned.

It's in my best interest to keep paying him. He doesn't get much local work and could move to a more populated area to make more money. Fortunately, he has dedicated clients who pay him enough to stick around.

[ - ] popticalillusion 1 point 1.2 yearsFeb 25, 2024 13:27:23 ago (+1/-0)

I'd try it out. Pickup replacement is pretty easy if you don't like the stock ones. I actually prefer the maple necks too. Good find!

What no Beyonce? The bitch is doing country. Haha.

[ - ] TheRealBuddha [op] 1 point 1.2 yearsFeb 24, 2024 15:06:35 ago (+1/-0)

Hmm... I don't know any of her songs. I sort of know who she is, but I don't recall ever hearing any of her music. Also, I don't do a whole lot of country.
