It's a distinction without a difference really. This 'republic not democracy' business gained wide currency on the far right due to an essay by JBS founder Robert Welch. But if you've read Aristotle's 'Politics' you'll know that he saw a republican form of government as just a subset of democracy.

Democracy sucks because it presupposes government at all. But to the extent the US is not a democracy it is even less representative. Gerrymandering, electoral restrictions to benefit the two major parties, money interests, etc. The US is basically in many ways a kritarchy, or rule by unelected judges. Openly anyway. The real business is conducted at the classified level.
