I have tried so many pedals, I always end up just using my amps overdrive.

Yeah, most of them compress the fuck out of your signal and sound terrible. I have been pretty impressed in recent years with modelers and IRs, though. I've gotten some really nice sounds going through nothing but the interafce, software, and out through quality monitors. Same problem, but you simulate what you remove, haha.
