Do we have a Canary? And if not, should we have one?

Canaries are pointless and you should assume the Feds have you personal data.

As of 03-29-2024 this website has not received any requests for user data from any law enforcement agency or any other government agency.

Would that statement on a page work?

The more I think about it, the sillier it becomes. It's not like any agency needs your permission to crawl the site for wrong think. It would be transparent to know if you've been actually contacted by cunts though.

Sometimes these requests come with an order not to talk about it. So the canary is the way to get around that. The canary dies when the canary statement is removed or is not updated on schedule.

The point of a canary is the Feds can't compell you to post anything. They can only stop you from posting. If the canary don't sing, site ownership and control has been compromised because you have either been silenced or you refuse to post.
This of course only works so long as you truly refuse to cooperate with the black suits threatening everything you love and hold dear.

Largely. Plus the entire point of one is to say we haven't been contacted without discussing it. So what if you get contacted and your users demand there be a canary on the site. If you yield to them you are just lying. And you can't discuss it with them because you are sealed from discussing it.

So that's basically not how canaries work. You don't demand a canary. That wouldn't be a canary. What would be a canary is if the site owner just happened to feel like putting a picture of a bird somewhere on the site without discussing why and you didn't ask questions about it. That's how canaries are supposed to work.
