I took my 3 yo grand daughter (she just turned 30) on one of her first hikes to a waterfall. She would run ahead to the next bend in the trail and jump with glee and shout "Oh boy! Another hill!".

I visited new york once. There was a kid in central park about twice her age who started to walk onto a mostly flat rock. His mother grabbed him telling him he would get hurt. While this 2 year old is jumping bolders (compared to her, bolders).

I don't believe in this method.

Let them climb and explore and hold their hand until they have the confidence to do it on their own.

Kids need to fall and break bones, scrape skin and get in fights.
