Native Irish language speaker travels around Ireland speaking only Irish. It doesn't go well.

Poor Ireland - if they don't stop the invasion of the third world (though the Irish are getting restive!) they won't be speaking English, let alone Irish.

If you watch the episodes you'll see that the Irish themselves are letting the language die out. I've been on a binge watching interviews from the 60s and 70s (pre mass invasion) and locals were totally apathetic to keeping the language alive for themselves. Sad.

It's been a long road, but our species has been heading for the cliff at top speed for hundreds of years. Not to be all gloom and doom, but smaller populations will be consumed and eradicated until the whole planet is operated by one group. Then the fun times will really begin.

Yep, evidently Irish is taught in all primary and intermediate schools as a compulsory subject and has been for decades, yet half these people cant even hold a simple conversation in their own language, sad times, but they need to actually live and practice their culture daily.

I thought that it had pretty much died out. Then (1950?) there was a campaign to revive it, with language lessons being compulsory in school. The children went through the motion of learning because the had to, but learned very little. (source: friend from Ireland)

Irish would be easier to learn if the spelling/pronunciation wasn't so fucked up. I realise no language is speak-as-you-spell, except maybe German, but Irish is on another level.

Have you ever seen Anglicized spellings of cherokee words? They're even worse than that. For example, there's a road named Kietuesta. It's pronounced cow-guess-key. Their own made up script will give you a headache to look at because it's like a bastard mix of English, Cryllic, and hieroglyphics.

Hindi is actually speak as you spell. All their words except for like 5 (the absolute most common words) are pronounced exactly the way they are spelled.

And even for those 5, it's a slangy version of exactly what's spelled, not like some whole different thing.
