Devon Stack did a great deep dive on the Chestnut epidemic. I had no idea it was so devastating.

Trees get virulent sickness. Elms were wiped out by slippery elm disease.

That's a good article Spaceman. In the county that I grew up in there was one American Chestnut that was 25 to 30 years old. It was mature enough to produce nuts. It may still be there for all I know. A friend of mine gave me 3 nuts off of it. I tried to get them to sprout but they didn't make it.
I think I'll give my friend a call and see if he can get me a few more to try it again.
