Ideally you would want a specialized device maybe even one with AI
A camera lens might be coated to pass most light, usually glass reflects UV and IR, so you get an IR or UV light and get the reflections. With the lights otherwise off. A camera lense is probably coated though.
For example a picture frame why would one are not reflect? Because it passes the light, it's a lense.
Also if it is wireless it'll transmit, you can detect the transmission.
Thermal camera easily finds ones plugged in. Battery is harder. If you have an IR camera you can look for the IR LEDs. Those red filter things with a flashing light help find the reflection of the lens.
I'd go with the InfiRay P2 Pro any day. It acts as a normal webcam so you have more flexibility (e.g. you can connect to a PC in addition to smartphone). It's very small. Other brands with 256x192 25Hz use the same InfiRay sensor and vary in features. There are more advanced models with a focus control, narrow field of view, etc. but I love the P2 Pro as a first camera. It's a fun thing to have if you've got the money.

So buy detecters

Looks like some import ban is making them unavailable from many sellers. I see it on banggood for a really good price ($219): https://www.banggood.com/INFIRAY-P2-Pro-Mobile-Phone-Infrared-Thermal-Imager-PCB-Circuit-Industrial-Test-Floor-Heating-Temperature-Thermal-Camera-p-1993799.html
The red filter things are spy camera detectors, lots of cheap models. They don't make a big difference but help see the lenses.

The most plausible assumption is that bugs are expensive and so most rooms don't have them by default.
So don't be predictable with the hotels you stay in and you'll be fine.
Also, anon posting is for fags.
