If you know anything about electronic music & production, this is a HUGE thing for one of the most iconic drum machines ever created. Even if you don't know anything about electronic music, you've definitely heard 909 drum sounds in some songs created after 1984.
I'm not very musically inclined, so can you tell me if this would allow more "organic" sounding playback?
There are an increasing number of really good solo-project metal "bands" these days. The better ones hire session drummers for recording/live play, but most use drum machines. The sterile sounding hits are a weak point.

Most of those bands aren't using drum machines, they're using software like GGD (Get Good Drums) which are basically plug-ins for DAWs like Pro-Tools & Ableton. Most of the drum plug-ins use real drummers to get a more natural feel so they're basically glorified playback programs that can be adjusted to any tempo and swing. Software is a lot cheaper than spending $3k+ on drum machines like the TR-909. Even the clone knockoffs from Berhinger & other smaller companies will still set you back about $500.
