I think that song is from like 1921 or so, probably before the cartoon was made, but funny anyway, and I could be wrong.

Interesting documentary: first rate narration.

…side note: at beginning of film the kind sheriff shouts out “hey you niggers, quit rolling them bones and come git yer ice cream”. For those who don’t know, ‘rolling bones’ refers to dice. Many moons ago people crafted dice from bone, most often ivory. I know this because I once owned a set of poker dice made from what was most likely ivory but I like to think it comes from dead niggers. Nothing spells luck like ‘dead nigger bones’. “LET EM ROLL!”.

It's been discussed before, but never widely. The tune itself is way older and originally came from The Old Rose Tree. Some variants like Old Zip Coon/Turkey in the Straw, had similar connotations to this version, while other songs are "safe". When most people hear it, they think of Do Your Ears Hang Low. In the end it's just an old tune.
