Sorry for the youtube link but invidious isn't working for me right now. From the video description:
Meet the Yorkshire drystone wallers who build and maintain hundreds of miles of farming boundaries. David Griffiths shares his passion for drystone walling during re-building work at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Great video NeedleStack. They are very practical, and attractive stone walls. I'd love to do some at one stage. The dry stone steps on the ha-ha are magnificent.
It's a testament to the hard-assed fuckers who had to de-rockify their lands to grow enough crops to only sorta-starve. All of that rock had to be pulled stone by stone from the very ground they wanted to plant in.
If anyone should care to research the topic they will find the Inclosure Act of 1773 passed by the British Parliament of the day, allowed the construction of many thousands of miles of dry stone walls, restricted "common" access and ultimately led to private ownership of land ..
The Inclosure Act 1773 was an Act of the Parliament of the Kingdom of Great Britain, passed during the reign of George III, it is still in force in the United Kingdom. It created a law that enabled enclosure of land, at the same time removing the right of commoners' access. Wiki.
Hitherto there was no "private property," anyone at all could graze their herds wherever they liked on the "common" .. the act put an end to that, as well it allowed the new "owners" to put lethal man traps wherever they liked, while the quarries established to provide the stones are equally hostile to the environment.
