Goats - When You Were a Little Kid, What Did You Want to be When You Grew Up?

submitted by Scyber to AskUpgoat 10 monthsJun 22, 2024 21:30:29 ago (+12/-0)     (AskUpgoat)

I'm talking when you were in elementary school - 1st, 2nd, 3rd grades.

I wanted to be a zookeeper at the San Diego Zoo after I visited it on vacation when I was 6.

Pilot. Grew up listening to my dad's stories about naval aviators, Chuck Yeager and the bell x-1, and his time serving as a flight surgeon for the Blue Angels. Also Top Gun came out when I was 7.

Same. I enrolled in a flight school last year but things sort of fell apart this year, so it's on hold for now.

Hang in there like a hair in a biscuit and make your plan happen!

I wanted to be a Blue Angels pilot - yet my older smart-ass cousin told me that I wasn't smart enough to be one - He has 3 DUIs and is in prison while I work as a subcontractor earning a decent salary.

I believe it was when I was 4 years old.
I wanted to be a truck driver.

Back in the olden days. We didn't wear set belts and bounced around in the car.
Signalling to truck drivers to pull their horn.
Anyways, I thought truck drivers were cool. And I wanted to be one when I grew up.

I said this to my older brother.
And he told me that I couldn't. Probably because I was younger and everything I liked was childish and wrong.
I asked why I couldn't, and the reason he gave was that a semi was too expensive.
I asked how much they cost, and he said what to him, a 6 year old, was a massive amount of money and said, "they cost $300".

Well that was far too expensive for 4 year old me.
So at that moment I decided I no longer wanted to be a truck driver, because I figured I'd never be able to afford to buy a semi.

Oddly enough I'm that now lol. I think my horn every time I see that gesture from kids.

[ - ] vol09877 1 point 10 monthsJun 23, 2024 00:33:38 ago (+1/-0)

what do you do now?

[ - ] WNwoman 4 points 10 monthsJun 22, 2024 21:42:44 ago (+4/-0)

A teacher. A good dose of diversity cured me of that dream real quick.

[ - ] DestroyerofSquirrels 3 points 10 monthsJun 23, 2024 02:59:21 ago (+3/-0)

Lawyer shockingly because I wanted the world to be just and before that a cop because I wanted to make the world safer. Oh to be young and naive. Did neither and I'm probably financially worse off than a lawyer and about the same as a cop but at least no one hates me for my career lol

[ - ] bobdole9 3 points 10 monthsJun 22, 2024 23:05:05 ago (+3/-0)

LEGO Master Builder.

Building cool shit out of Lego and K'Nex led me to a more practical path of architecture or engineering.

Having an engineering teacher in high school showed me they really have no soul or creative side. That person could have been a NPC and didn't know then.

Went to school for graphic design...learned web development and rolled with that as a real profession.

Now I want to be a farmer like my grandpa was when I was 5.

[ - ] Fascinus 3 points 10 monthsJun 22, 2024 22:41:24 ago (+3/-0)

I was always a little bit jealous of those guys. The ones that knew they wanted to be a fireman at 8 and then grew up to do just that.

I imagine that's because I never could quite figure out what I wanted to be.

Still haven't really.

[ - ] bobdole9 3 points 10 monthsJun 22, 2024 23:09:32 ago (+3/-0)

Same boat. Didn't help that the internet didn't exist when I was young, so how would I know I'd be a web developer someday.

Soon I'm going to be selling French pastries, potentially from a truck.

[ - ] Trope 2 points 10 monthsJun 22, 2024 23:14:59 ago (+2/-0)

I wish you well on your food vending activities. The hardest part is paying the health department for the license.

[ - ] bobdole9 3 points 10 monthsJun 22, 2024 23:24:52 ago (+3/-0)

Thank you. I'm having a blast combing over the rules to know how to break them properly.

Main thing I'm learning is I really need a proper physical store first...then add the truck.

I wanted to make cartoons. I’ve been at it professionally for 30 years. The thrill is beginning to wane.

[ - ] Trope 1 point 10 monthsJun 22, 2024 23:13:34 ago (+1/-0)

I get a great kick when I see documentaries of cartoonists using animation celluloid. Would hate to be doing it all on computers in the modern era.

[ - ] PearofAnguishJuniorManager 0 points 10 monthsJun 23, 2024 17:55:10 ago (+0/-0)*

When I got my first animation job in 1990, I drew on paper. I drew the animation for Earthworm Jim. Old game, on the Super Nintendo. After 1995, it’s all been on a computer. I do miss the old ways.

[ - ] Looneyskiproony 2 points 10 monthsJun 23, 2024 07:52:37 ago (+2/-0)

Truck driver. And I did it. Last of the wildcatters here. Loved trucks. We had a pedestrian bridge in the town I grew up in nobody used. I would be found there getting the trucks to blow their horns. Couple drivers from town would let me sit in theirs trucks. Sealed the deal so to speak

A Stock Trader

I had a neighbor whose grandfather was a Doctor who did quite well! His son (my friends father) had an old-school ticker machine that spit out ticker tape in his home office. I was so enamored with the Stock Market, I wanted to work on a Trading Floor. I did end up working on multiple trading floors & trading desks as a Technical Systems & Support analyst. I was a systems guy, My job was keeping everything up and running, and triaging outages. I was on an OTC Trading Floor on 9-11. So I didn't get exactly what I wanted, but still had a great career in Finance, Banking, & Technology.

Still cool. I also had dreams of that as a teenager, and still occasionally entertain the thought. I'm a victim of 1980's false encouragement in school though. learned after awhile that just because I could plagiarize a TV show for a 3rd grade creative writing assignment, and do it better than the other 3rd grade apes in my class, didn't actually make me a good writer.

[ - ] Nosferatjew 2 points 10 monthsJun 22, 2024 22:18:01 ago (+2/-0)

Garbage truck driver. I liked the truck.

No one ever expects much from a moth.

[ - ] Nerva 1 point 10 monthsJun 23, 2024 09:09:37 ago (+1/-0)

I wanted to be a librarian when I was very little. I did volunteer at my local library as soon as I was old enough and always participated in their youth contests.

However, life had other plans for me and I never even got close to trying. I'm kind of glad in a way though, as it would not have lasted - I would refuse to let mentally ill fags read to kids, so I would have been fired for non-compliance and displaced anyway.

[ - ] Trope 0 points 10 monthsJun 23, 2024 10:27:57 ago (+0/-0)

It would be cool if Librarians made good money. I can romanticize curating a collection of knowledge.

I wasn’t sure, but I knew I didn’t want to do it their way and have achieved that goal. Im successfull above and beyond most of my family members and they all have degrees. I have a GED.

[ - ] mannerbund 0 points 10 monthsJun 23, 2024 17:51:56 ago (+0/-0)

I wanted to be an aeronautical engineer, to design, build, and fly airplanes.

The dream faded with time and I followed software and systems engineering instead, dropping out of college promptly after starting after seeing what a scam it was.

I made it somewhere, and now I especially try to go the extra mile for the kids without a degree, assuming they've got some energy in them. It's my way of paying it forward, and against the educational system.

[ - ] AngryWhiteKeyboardWarrior 0 points 10 monthsJun 23, 2024 11:43:47 ago (+0/-0)

paleontologist because I was a dinosaur nerd in kindergarten. Then I realized what a paleontologist actually did, and changed it to fighter pilot.

Ended up being neither. Although I do have over 40 hours of private pilot time under my belt and got to serve on an aircraft carrier watching other people fly planes... I guess that's something.

Now-a-days I mainly just want to be dead when I grow up. My life as I knew it ended on Friday night.

I just KNEW that when I grew up I was headed to commifornia. I was going to be a Stunt Man!
My cousin and I were planning on becoming stunt men and making all those cool scenes in the movies. We figured that when we were not making Great Stunts for movies we would run up to the mountains in Oregon and Washington and finally get PROOF that Bigfoot is REAL!
Man o man do I miss those days.

I was in basketball and wanted to be a "basket ball man", I am horribly unathletic, which turned out to be ok.

[ - ] Trope 0 points 10 monthsJun 22, 2024 22:15:09 ago (+0/-0)

Video games were still good back then. I would draft up entire side scroller levels on paper in hopes of one day being a game developer back in kindergarten. Fortunately, I got it all out of my system before high school ended.

And video games are no longer good.

Have you become yourself yet or are you still waiting for bottom surgery?

[ - ] Sector2 0 points 10 monthsJun 23, 2024 16:09:50 ago (+0/-0)

Had a couple more cups of coffee and bottom surgery will no longer be needed.
