Future animal sacrifice is described in the book of Ezekiel. Theology based on the idea of the sacrificial death of a messiah is fundamentally flawed because the righteous are not sacrificed.

The wicked [shall be] a ransom for the righteous, and the transgressor for the upright.

The whole point of the self sacrifice of the righteous one is that He is thus able to provide atonement for the unrighteous, i.e. everyone else.

The idea is repugnant to the Torah. Death of the innocents was one of the reasons for the punishment of Israel.

The description of the temple in the book of Ezekiel seems to be describing the temple that would be built to replace the one built by Solomon. This would make the instructions applicable to the rebuilding of the temple by Ezra, and would likely also apply to the Herodian upgrade.
