when your house smells like gas and diesel exhaust

No thanks. I'll keep my house with it's fire wall and sealed door separating it from the garage/shop.

What you see in the picture is just the man cave. The living quarters is likely separate.
They're called a 'shouse' (shop-house).

I see a kitchen and a livingroom. I'm sure the bedrooms and bathrooms are separated, but that's probably about it.

Round here, we call these "barndaminiums".

I've heard the term. For whatever reason, they are 'shouses' here.
There are dedicated developments around us with 20 or more units, each on 3-5 acre lots, plus many others.
The real kitchen and living/sleeping area is probably on the other side of the wall behind the cars and boat.
What you're seeing is a decked out entertainment/party/trophy room with a bar and all the amenities plus some storage space.
I have been in several in my area, and I own a heated storage building like that. We may upgrade it and add living space on one side when we get too old and tired to take care of the lake place we're in now.

My wife doesn't want my garage in the house. Not now, not ever. And I'm not sure I do either. But you know if I insist on having my stupid cars in there, I have to be willing to decorate it. Which I'm not.

I guess a car can be a nice show piece, if you never intend to drive it. But I've never wanted a car like that. I mean yet. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, but it's not what I collect.

My dad used to really like those cheesy Clive Cussler novels starring Dirk Pitt. I've read a few of them, kind of a dollar store version of Tom Clancy. Anyway, this photo reminds me of Dirk Pitts converted Aircraft hanger that was his house/garage/hanger.

Yep, and had a picture of whichever of his classic cars that he managed to insert into the story. They aren't bad, but if you're gonna spend time reading there's definitely better options.

'Dirk Pitt'

Clive was pretty open about his insecurities. I've read a few of those.

Yes/no. Looks badass af, but I don't want diesel soot on my kitchen and furniture

Honestly probably owned by someone who doesn't work on or drive those things, but who knows maybe they have a shop too.

Just imagine trying to keep the place clean enough to eat.

Next few years wife and I are going to find land and build this.

Barnhouses are the way to go.

There are a lot of them where I live, and more being built. Very popular. (Lakes/vacation area).
Most aren't quite that fancy.

When presented the idea of living in a garage, this is the pre-sell idea. The after effect understanding is actually living in a garage, with your cars and shit and without hardwood.
