I'm looking to replace an older machine and install Linux.

I've used many different versions of Linux but I thought I'd ask and see if there's something else I might be interested in. I'm looking for a secure way to access the internet. Does anyone have any experience with Qubes-Whonix?

Please list any good Linux OS's you recommend.

I've used red hat, ubuntu, mint, whonix, and I tried installing Arch. I probably installed others but that's all I can think of right now.

I used to use manjaro, I liked it but I've moved onto mint, I would like to get away from system d in all honesty.

We need a version of Mint on top of Devuan (no systemD).

I would stay away from anything based on Ubuntu simply because they cause random lock-ups with no resolution in sight. It's been that way for years. There is a chance that it only affects systems which use the proprietary NVIDIA driver, but there is no confirmation from anyone in development so it's all at your own risk.

Linux mint is amazing, it simply just works. Can still do whatever you need to do in terminal just like I used to do in OS X.

Devuan has been a pretty solid and reliable distro I have been running a web server on.

It's basically like a pared down version of ubuntu from a decade or two ago, before it went systemd and got all gay[er].
Or just a mutated debian, in a way.

Devuan is the best!! However it can be tough to install proprietary drivers if you do heavy graphics card stuff.

Depend on what you want.

Do you want something that "Just works"? Go with Ununtu.

Do you want something specific? You'll waste a lot of your life managing everything, but you want Arch for that.

I'm somewhere in between those two. I don't want Ubuntu. I've tried installing Arch as a VM before and it didn't work out for me. I got very close but never was able to get it to boot. I want something secure.. something like whonix. I might give Arch another try. I'm not against installing and trying different ones before I make a final decision.

Nowadays Arch has a much simpler install process and is pretty straightforward. But it really is a pain to maintain everything, like tofu said.

If you were happy with Mint, it is not a bad choice (22 beta just dropped).

I am on openSUSE right now and it's a little different which can cause some issues when it comes to programming/development work.

I am thinking of switching to Devuan, a Debian based system that does not run system d, just in case you were thinking of doing the same.

(for reference, I'm running a 10 year old PC and with Xfce and this thing runs great, way better than it did with Windows 7)

Tails or whonix.

Kubuntu with Plasma i3 is nice. There are some newer options, but i3 is still nice.

It might be useful to have porteus - then when you want an upgrading of hardware, just plug it in a new machine.

Also have an Arch with i3
Would like and artix with DWM

I've used Kubuntu for years. I've never had to reinstall from scratch but I do have problems sometimes upgrading to a new official version.

I used Ubuntu and had some issues like that also. I couldn't get updates to work.

ALL Linuxes suck. Devuan sucks slightly less.

It hasn't been mentioned but I like Kali. I haven't used it in a while. It is for pen testing and you can see exactly what is going on with the machine. No bloat.

been using Ubuntu since the days when manually installing a driver and library dependencies to get the wireless NIC to work took days. Still use it because it has the biggest foot print in terms of qualified apps, multiverse repos, install base. That being said I have heard nothing but rave reviews about Mint. Ubuntu is the Microsoft of 'nix, as canonical is focused on enterprise and office computing, Mint has a smaller but more dedicated developer base in terms of usability

I'm using Zorin; it works great on older machines (I know you're getting a new one, maybe try it on your old first.)
