It wasn't, which is why they don't run the plantation that way any more. Debt is far more effective than chains, and it's far less obvious to the average slave how to fix the problem. Chains rattle and clank and remind you of your servitude too much. The current system is far more oppressive and effective.

Can't honestly think of anything I would use an unskilled worker I can't trust for. Maybe picking up trash but while they're wandering around the nigger could easily slack off or steal shit
