Bout nine years ago my parents chose to help out my scumbag nephew with a place to stay. My mom had a lot of cash and old jewelry, couple south African gold Krugerrand, stuff like that. Probably around $20k in total. She knew my nephew is a dip shit, so she put it all in a lockbox and moved it to my 87 year old grandfather's house.

I used to care for my grandfather, up until he died. I'd clean his house, go grocery shopping for him, take him to his Dr appointments, and just hang out and watch Ponderosa and smoke a cigar. I was with him when he had the stroke that killed him. Grandpa was sharp, but not very ambulatory. This will become relevant in a minute.

So shitbag nephew manages to find the key to the lockbox, got his nigger drug dealer to give him a ride to Grandpas house, and he emptied the lock box. It wasn't long before my mom noticed the shit was gone, and he was obviously the prime suspect. The cops got involved and this shit head is weaving a tale about how it had to be me that took it since I was always there. This wasn't the first time he tried to do this shit. He's given the cops my name instead of his multiple times, I still get calls from PBSD. Long story short he finally admitted to it and gets sentenced for grand theft. This fuck face piece of shit had the balls to show up at my father's funeral and ask me for forgiveness. He's lucky I didn't kill him where he stood.

All that to say this, is it possible you have a scumbag family member that would do something like this?

Sorry to hear this big guy. When I've lived in apartments and maintenance has come around, all doors are shut. They're only allowed where the problem is. I follow them like a bad smell and watch everything they're doing. Most maintenance stuff I could handle on my own but I don't need some fuck casing my place.

If other people do not know that she knows, then perhaps set up some hidden cameras. Put out some fake or cheap items and talk about receiving them to the likely thieves

If someone were to steal fake cash and then try to use it they may get arrested.

For the items, check nearby pawn shops.

Leave something in a clear container coated in urushiol - from a plant - they won't know where it came from.

Also check if some of the items are just misplaced

Consider changing the locks, if they ask for a key - just give them a key that does not actually work, just some random key.

If the place hadn't been ransacked to find the goods, then it was someone with some inside knowledge that had already either knew exactly what they were after and went right to it, or had a pretty good idea of what and where.

Like a stone thrown into a pond, it may not be the person you know that took it. It may be someone they talked to, or someone else THAT person then talked too.

Had some festive young lads came sniffing around here years ago. Complete strangers.

They were disappointed. And they had a long walk back to town.
