Campfire

submitted by MaryXmas to Fatherhood 11 monthsJul 7, 2024 11:32:53 ago (+16/-0)     (Fatherhood)

Today we had a campfire. We flipped through an old campfire cook book to see what they looked like and then the kids piled in the red wagon. We went to the oak woods on the back lot. My daughter loved watching everything and my son went around grabbing every stick in sight and lightly put it on the fire, just like I taught him. We learned about fire safety, how to put sticks on the fire and how to identify brown and dry sticks that would be good to burn. We would have roasted marshmallows but we had a tantrum earlier so we lost our "special treat". There was lots of poison ivy but that will be a lesson for another day, I am hoping we made it out ok. We also found 3 frogs under a log and got to hold one. That was a big hit.

A dad is not the same as a father, be a father.

For the poison ivy find a mullein plant after you are out of the woods and rub a few leaves over your hands and arms. It's all in the ditches along the side of the road. If used shortly after contact with poison plants it will prevent the infection. With the stuff you get from a store you use it After the infection breaks out.
If for some reason it doesn't work for you then you can always buy a cream from a store later.

Today I learned.

Great tip! Of course the Mullein leaves would pick up the oils. Never would have thought of it.

While we're on the subject, buddy of mine who lived in the wilderness for years like Grizzly fucking Adams told me that nature offers no finer substitute for toilet paper than Mullein leaves.

Evidently, the prairie niggers would mash up the roots and immerse them in ponds to paralyze fish, which could then float to the surface, where they could be gathered by hand. I've heard this called a "fish fuddle".

Never tried it and I'm told that smoking the flowers can impart a mild intoxicating effect.

Nice. Thank you! I figured they'd make good toilet paper but I've never heard of the other things to use it for. I might give those flowers a try.

My grandma made a tea out of it for dad when he had stomach problems.

It's a little more expensive, but this is, hands-down, the absolute best topical poison ivy/oak/sumac cream I have ever been able to find or use.
It flat out works.

I keep a tube of this on hand at home, and in the car aid bag, and any time I'm going into areas that I know do or may have poison ivy, oak, or sumac.

Poison ivy rash is caused by the skins reaction to an oily resin called urushiol (u-ROO-she-ol). This oil is in the leaves, stems and roots of poison ivy, oak, or sumac.

Urushiol oil is almost as chemically stable as dirt, so unless you neutralize it, it stays.
A few years back, archeologists found jars with poison ivy plant residue in them in a dig that was a couple thousand years old, and the researcher STILL got a rash from it.

Zanfel begins working on contact. Just smear it on. No scrubbing. I've gotten relief from the itching almost immediately.

But Zanfel's biggest plus is that it chemically bonds to the urushiol oil molecules themselves, forming an emulsion that can be washed away. The skin of the affected area will form a crusty scab over the effected skin patches, but that is normal and washes away, leaving new healthy pink skin underneath.

Dawn will work but that chemical is sticky like axel grease so you need to scrub with a washcloth. Saw a few videos on it. I bet that stuff works well too.

Next time you get the rash, give it the super hot water treatment in the shower. It's like the most satisfying scratching of an itch X10. Had poison oak for most of two years while cleaning up 20 acres. Not saying it's worth getting the rash for that feeling, but it's close.

That's a hit of dopamine my friend. Cold plunge or hot sauce will do that. Coke too.

It's not your job to be their friend. Being a father means being unpopular sometimes. It's simple really, reward good behavior and punish bad behavior. Sometimes you gotta tear their little asses up.

I don't raise my voice often, but I don't yell - I roar. Those kids listen well. But if you do that too much, they get resentful and lose their respect for you. It needs to be balanced, otherwise you are just a shitty parent. I think we probably agree with each other but you might think I am a weak pussy because I mostly talk about the fun stuff.

Dawn dish soap works better for removing the invisible urushiol oil. Do not waste your money on the antipoison ivy garbage that is overpriced. Just do a rub down on where you think it came into contact with that dish soap, and also your entire arms - forearms and elbows etc. Imagine you were working in a car garage - how the hell did that oil stain get there? Only this shit is invisible! Wash all those places…

"A dad is not the same as a father, be a father."

And it takes a Real Man(tm) to be a stepdad, right bud?

I wouldn't know. If this is in reference to raising another man's child, that is going to be a no from me.
