Beginning back in 1987, Colombia started converting some of their C-47s to gunships.
They initially switched out the three Vietnam-era General Electric brand miniguns for three of the M3 variant of the Browning .50 caliber HMG. The highly modified M3 has double the cyclic rate (1150-1250rpm instead of 550-600rpm) of the M2. That's about 3,750 .50 cal rounds raining down on somebody's head every minute (or 62 every second).

It was found that the .50's could punch down straight through trees and other cover, and were much better able to penetrate the jungle canopy than the smaller, lighter, 7.62x51mm rounds of the miniguns. If you look around your average city block, there is no place to hide that the .50 won't eventually get you.

The M3's also proved to be more reliable and maintainable than the GE manufactured M-134's. That was what they were operating the whole time I was there.

In 2006, Colombia started operating five armed Basler BT-67 (Colombian Air Force designation: AC-47T). Civilians call it "Avion Fantasma" (ghost plane). The BT-67's are C-47/DC-3s modified by the Basler Corporation of Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Columbia continues to use BT-67's for CAS unto this day, but most recently they had again switched out the M3's for General Dynamics manufactured GAU-19/A three-barrelled .50 cals, with selectable cyclic rates of 1,000, 1,300 or 2,000 rounds per minute, slaved to a forward looking infrared system. They also have the ability to carry bombs.

At least one has been seen fitted with one GAU-19/A and a 20 mm cannon, most likely a French-made M621.

One other clever thing they did was switch to ammo belts that don't include any tracers. The thermal sight used is quite capable of seeing the friction heated projectiles as they travel through the air just fine, so the use of tracers would just be redundant, and since the rounds are supersonic, the targets on the ground often have no idea they are being engaged until .50 rounds start falling on them like rain, as the bullets arrive before the sound of their having been fired.
