The sparrows were ruthlessly tortured and exterminated, because they eat seeds and grain. The Chinese civilians would bang pots and pans together around sunset, scaring the sparrows so they would not land to rest. They would literally exhaust them to the point that they fell out of the sky. They destroyed their nests and eggs. Millions of sparrows died at the hands of these retarded chink-sheep. Some biologists tried to warn Mao that this program could have terrible repercussions- they were ignored or "silenced". Mao knew better than them, right?

The first year after all the sparrows were nearly wiped out, the Chinese harvest was about 30% greater than previous years. So, it was a success, hooray! The locusts' most dangerous predator is the sparrow. Sparrows ate enough locusts to protect the harvests every year. The amount of grain/seeds they ate was negligible compared to what the locusts did.
