The claim is that radioactive particles will be spread, through the jet stream and local weather, to every inch of the globe as a result of thousands of nuclear weapons popping off in every major city in Russia, China and Europe. And, that these radioactive particles will not be toxic for humans and animals but will also prevent farming, anywhere on the planet, for decades.

Chernobyl want even an explosion, only a small leak from a reactor core, but it increased the background radiation levels of the northern hemisphere for better than 20 years.

“Nuclear winter” is, in fact, the soot, etc. allegedly cooling the Earth for decades. Fallout can be almost completely avoided during a nuclear explosion, and Chernobyl was a totally different beast than how bombs work.
