Well, are there any blacks inside? If not, they work.

[ - ] Thyhorrorcosmic103 6 points 10 monthsJul 26, 2024 12:29:08 ago (+6/-0)

They only work at night.

You can cut old boxes up and use the cardboard to fit the window. Then use masking tape over the sides and it'll block out all light.

I stopped doing that though because the blackout room was messing with my circadian rhythm.

You might want to look into window awnings. Shade the window and prevent solar energy from entering to help keep it cool at the same time.

I would do the same thing on night shift. Cardboard, aluminum tape, and blue painters tape would block everything.

Painters tape was to protect the wall. Aluminum tape over the painters tape to block the light coming through the painters tape.

Masking tape = painters tape.

If you cut the cardboard right, you don't need the aluminum tape.

I did that once. I found I could sleep for 13 hours straight. Between that and having an 11 hour job all my time disappeared.

I made a more permanent version of this with some lauan plywood and foam board. Added some hinges so sunlight is still accessible. It's great for light and temperature control. I have been told the room is eerily still but it' great when you want to focus or sleep.

Meh, just wear a travel/ night mask.

The best I've found for blocking out sunlight is a cow hide...after slaughtering and skinning your cow simply stretch the hide out onto a 10ft x 10ft wood frame and secure it with
1 1/2" finishing nails, then scrape off all fat and let it dry until it's like cardboard, then use clean burlap soaked in vinegar to scrub the hide clean, do it a couple times and then let sit for about a week, the hide will be stiff but if you have your old lady gnaw on it for a couple of weeks it'll become pliable enough to where it can be folded for storage, don't worry about the pronounced scent of the hide, after a while you'll get so used to it that you'll want a hide for the bed, women go crazy over that primordial aroma, particularly if you leave a few strips of meat and fat attached the hide to where it slightly putrifies, makes for great role playing when you want to add a bit of spice to your lives, just so you know, black pepper coated over the meat strips will prevent deer flies from swarming in and interrupting those tense moments of coital engagement in fact, it's even a good idea to roll the old lady in black pepper too, but if all you're looking to do is block the sunlight so as to relive those days of incarceration and being in solitary confinement then a rotting putrified cow hide is the best.
I'll post some more helpful hints on how to spice up that stagnant and stale relationship of yours next week and hopefully everyone will step away from that cliff's edge or cancel their appointment with Dr. Kevorkian.
over and out.

If you get the ones that are rated for insulation (not like an R rating, just specifically mention thermal blocking)they actually work well for actually making them blackout. Also as someone else said, ceiling to floor.

Das raycis!

[ - ] Master_Foo 2 points 10 monthsJul 26, 2024 10:01:12 ago (+2/-0)

You have to double them up.
Then they work great.

[ - ] VitaminSieg 1 point 10 monthsJul 26, 2024 11:53:45 ago (+1/-0)

Like, polarized curtains placed at right angles?

[ - ] Master_Foo 2 points 10 monthsJul 26, 2024 11:57:14 ago (+2/-0)

You could get fancy and buy the curtains that are made out of black holes.

[ - ] Trope 1 point 10 monthsJul 26, 2024 23:09:26 ago (+1/-0)

Don’t, they suck.

How do you service those if/when they break? From what I understand, walls in Germany are brick or masonry so it would be a large job.

[ - ] fritz_maurentod 1 point 10 monthsJul 26, 2024 11:59:15 ago (+1/-0)

They aren't as common in Germany as you might expect. I have this cheap alternative and it works quite well:

They are either mounted on the exterior wall with covers around them, or integrated into the wall during construction with an access panel inside the house. https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=H4MfuWwX&id=420FFAA70E30009E90B095E9EA488817B7E855C2&thid=OIP.H4MfuWwXOs45WsrqWkz_iAHaHa&mediaurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.alulux.de%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2021%2F05%2F1601632_Vorbaurollladen_Qompact2-1.jpg&cdnurl=https%3A%2F%2Fth.bing.com%2Fth%2Fid%2FR.1f831fb96c173ace395acaea5a4cff88%3Frik%3DwlXotxeISOrplQ%26pid%3DImgRaw%26r%3D0&exph=1024&expw=1024&q=rolladen&simid=608020593735982097&form=IRPRST&ck=2BF8B5D558D42320BA3F56A1BD08EBA4&selectedindex=25&itb=0&ajaxhist=0&ajaxserp=0&vt=0&sim=11">not sure if this Bing search link will work

How weird. We have several sets of curtains which look very similar and they work well. Make sure it has multiple layers of fabric. I think yours are missing the 'blackout' fabric on the other side. Send them back.

Same thing happened to me today

[ - ] texasblood 1 point 10 monthsJul 26, 2024 09:12:35 ago (+1/-0)

I've used foil for decades to black out windows from light and Texas afternoon heat.
Use painters tape to secure.
Duct tape makes a mess

[ - ] Imsickofmakingusernames 1 point 10 monthsJul 26, 2024 08:52:00 ago (+1/-0)

That sucks. lol It is a real thing fyi. Also recommend for full effect get floor to ceiling length. Otherwise you get the light shining above.

[ - ] x0x7 0 points 10 monthsJul 26, 2024 15:40:35 ago (+0/-0)

Also you need to get them to hug as close as possible to the window. No offset. But none of that will fix these curtains.

[ - ] Wahaha 0 points 10 monthsJul 27, 2024 06:32:55 ago (+0/-0)

I use a sleep mask instead. That one I get to remove without getting out of bed and removing it helps with waking up.

[ - ] dass 0 points 10 monthsJul 26, 2024 19:02:00 ago (+0/-0)

Yea sir, it is 'Total black out' . Black is totally out with this product. You will want the 'Total White out ' package.'

[ - ] con77 0 points 10 monthsJul 26, 2024 15:36:30 ago (+0/-0)

my room is a cold dark cave with a ceiling fan.

[ - ] GrayDragon 0 points 10 monthsJul 26, 2024 15:01:30 ago (+0/-0)

Do you have the packaging? Don't buy anything less than 100% blackout. The 99% is useless for my purposes.
