My boys love to wrestle so we have a padded floor set up with padding three feet up the wall.

They go into the room and scream aaaaahhh to tell me it's time to get my ass kicked in another 2v1

Just when I thought I was doing ok, now the benchmark is batman.

The backyard roller coaster guy is where the bar sits for me currently.

Ha. Or the wooden Lamborghini? I don't care for those dads. I think they are doing it for themselves and it makes me lose respect for the effort. My dad did that type of thing. I shot archery and outgrew my toy fiberglass bow. Rather than getting me a new one, he tried to build 4 different bows out of wood. None of them worked and they all cracked. So... I never did get a bow until I bought one for myself years later. He wanted to do his wood working project and neglected to realize that I didn't care at all, I just wanted to shoot boxes in the back yard. I have to catch myself sometimes - am I doing this because this is what my kid needs, or this is what I want.

Totally get that, man.

It's definitely not about me. I just want to fill their little lives with happy memories, you know?

Nothing like the joy of an innocent child.

Thanks for sharing your story and perspective, BTW. I think it's important to try to see things from their point of view.

" it's important to try to see things from their point of view.". This is a pretty profound statement and one that I have seen echoed in books about men and boys. The crux of the issue is that all men will eventually fail. They will have a fault, miss a payment, drink too much, even just getting old - they will fail sometime. In this void, the child will(in some circumstances) become a man of sorts but there will always be a void. This gets into a religious conversation because the only one with no fault would be God and Jesus. I believe it is important for men to seek faith to fill in the faults and misdeeds of the flawed parent figures we all have. I would say as much to my kids - here are my faults and I am sorry. I am only able to provide so much but seek greater wisdom in the Lord.

Playing and having fun with your kids really makes a difference. I wish I'd done it more.
