What would cause the plane to crash straight down like that? Usually they're gliding forward somewhat. This one, nothing.

[ - ] KosherHiveKicker 10 points 1 monthAug 9, 2024 21:09:17 ago (+10/-0)

The plane had to slow down enough to stall completely to fall like that.

It had to be a catastrophic failure of basic systems, or an idiot pilot.

[ - ] Trope 4 points 1 monthAug 9, 2024 21:31:53 ago (+4/-0)

Well shit, aim down. You know: Steer into it. Like driving in snow. Get back some of that air traction. Ya know: Lift.

[ - ] hylo 0 points 1 monthAug 10, 2024 09:14:18 ago (+0/-0)

You can't. The control surfaces don't have enough airflow to turn the plane. It's called a flatspin and it's deadly.

Helicopter pilot maybe?
The think they can hover.

[ - ] dass 9 points 1 monthAug 9, 2024 22:47:38 ago (+9/-0)

Did a quick look into the crash -
There was a metrological report of severe icing conditions in the area / altitude the aircraft would be flying at.
Pilots also had the auto pilot on - which would compensate for a deteriorating flight profile up until the point where it becomes too much for the AP to fly the craft and would then automatically switch off - leaving the pilots now suddenly with an almost unrecoverable flight, unless they had been paying attention.
The ATR turbo prop aircraft has a somewhat bad reputation for severe icing conditions (due to its design) and is meant to be hand-flown - without the use of the AP - if these conditions cannot be avoided, so this way the pilot is aware of how the ice is potentially affecting the craft by it's handling in flight.

Cargo shift fucked up a transporter in Afghanistan...started to climb then dropped.

Did the engines die out and never had proper control trying to "glide"?

[ - ] Master_Foo 0 points 1 monthAug 9, 2024 22:17:33 ago (+1/-1)

If an engine loses power, it will glide for a while. But eventually, It's just going to lose energy, just like anything in a medium with friction.
At that point, the plane is more like a leaf than a plane.

[ - ] Osmanthus 2 points 1 monthAug 10, 2024 02:21:41 ago (+2/-0)

No, it doest work like that. It will glide till it hits the ground!

Vaccident, DEI Pilot, or Boeings quality control?

take your bets

[ - ] uvulectomy 0 points 1 monthAug 9, 2024 23:16:17 ago (+0/-0)

Well considering it's an ATR not a Boeing....

[ - ] Osmanthus 2 points 1 monthAug 10, 2024 02:20:27 ago (+2/-0)*

I have studied hundreds of crash reports by the ntsb. (I am ga pilot)

The way this plane is falling out of the air like that is very unusual (flat spin) for a passenger plane. I almost want to say only on purpose could it happen this way.
But idiots manage to do the impossible every day, but this would take a level of incompetence it's hard to accept.

[ - ] oyveyo 2 points 1 monthAug 9, 2024 21:40:10 ago (+2/-0)

Someone who opposes the jews just got wacked.

There are no plane accidents.

[ - ] Master_Foo 0 points 1 monthAug 10, 2024 16:38:52 ago (+0/-0)

planes don't exist because the Earf is a flat plain.

[ - ] NoRefunds 2 points 1 monthAug 9, 2024 21:20:39 ago (+2/-0)

How do you fuck up that badly to stall that way

[ - ] Portmanure 5 points 1 monthAug 9, 2024 23:07:29 ago (+5/-0)

They may not have known just how iced up they were. This raises the stall speed to a much higher speed than usual, so when they pulled the throttles back to start their descent, slowed down a bit and hit that higher than normal stall speed, stalled and started to fall, probably a little confused, their reaction my not have been immediate, and may not have worked at all depending on how iced up the control surfaces where. Once they entered the flat spin, normal stall recovery procedures don’t work. Very few pilots are trained to recover from a flat spin. Normal stall recovery can make the situation worse. In that type of airplane (turbo prop, T-Tail,) even the best pilots may not get out of it. I feel bad for them, they got into a situation they weren’t prepared for…

[ - ] Osmanthus 1 point 1 monthAug 10, 2024 02:55:42 ago (+1/-0)

I wouldn't say very few pilots have spin training. Plenty do.
But getting a passenger plane into a flat spin is completely nuts.

[ - ] Portmanure 0 points 1 monthAug 10, 2024 14:29:40 ago (+0/-0)

Just to clarify I didn’t say very few pilots have spin training. So, I agree with you that I wouldn’t say that. All pilots have spin training. Which is called stall recovery. Stalls may or may not result in a spin. I was referring to flat spins which is a different and rare situation that can result from stalling and spinning or just a loss of forward airspeed during a maneuver.

[ - ] oyveyo 2 points 1 monthAug 9, 2024 21:36:13 ago (+2/-0)

Indeed, stall alarm goes off, put your nose down. Either the pilot was an idiot, the pilot became unconscious, or a mechanical failure with the controls.

[ - ] dass 2 points 1 monthAug 9, 2024 22:56:33 ago (+2/-0)

Pilots had the AP on, severe icing - flight profile deteriorates until AP automatically switches off - pilots left with an unrecoverable flight in stall because they weren't paying attention to the worsening ice conditions of the aircraft - by that time the AP deactivates everything is out of configuration for actual piloting and frozen solid and seconds away from an unrecoverable stall.

[ - ] rzr97 1 point 1 monthAug 9, 2024 22:30:34 ago (+1/-0)

Knowing nothing of planes, I thought to myself I wonder if they could turn nose down to try to build up speed to glide. Would have had to do it much higher though I'd image.

[ - ] hylo 1 point 1 monthAug 10, 2024 09:18:19 ago (+1/-0)

Control sufaces do nothing when there is not enough airflow over them. They are fucked.

[ - ] CoinQuest 0 points 1 monthAug 13, 2024 10:09:16 ago (+0/-0)

So we need stall recovery rockets.

[ - ] rzr97 0 points 1 monthAug 15, 2024 00:58:32 ago (+0/-0)

Uhh...someone. Hello, out there. This guy here just solved these problems. I mean this would work.

Good point. Thanks!

[ - ] Spaceman84 1 point 1 monthAug 9, 2024 23:06:14 ago (+1/-0)

I saw this earlier and figured it was CGI. Usually when a commercial airliner goes down it's not in a flat spin.

Extreme icing events

Driving in an ice storm is very unfun when the ice accumulates unevenly, fucking with your control...no way flying in similar conditions is more fun.
