Changed a carborator and split some logs

submitted by MaryXmas to Fatherhood 10 monthsAug 15, 2024 21:39:37 ago (+29/-0)     (Fatherhood)

I had some bad gas in the log splitter so we changed the carb and split the 8 logs I had laying around. My boy loved it. I didn't let him work the controls but he got to turn it off when we were all done. He was totally in awe. I was hamming it up and made a big mess which was great. Well done son.

Sister in law just called. Says she's broken down on the road. 40 minute drive there. Ask her to try to start the car. Doesn't even try to turn over. Regret that I didn't bring any tools or my voltmeter, "just in case". Decide to at least pretend to know what I'm doing. Check oil level. There's no oil.

Hey Sister in law, were there any dash warning lights on before this happened.

"Yes. The little genie thing with the oil dripping out of it."

How long had that light been on?

"Two or three days."

Purdy sure I found the problem.

Hope your brother didn't breed with her. Yikes.

You're a lucky man!

I used to spend summers at my grandpa's farm in Arkansas. He was in the marines for life and fought on gudalcanal in ww2. He used to make us get up at 6am and go cut down trees for firewood like 6 days a week. He had one of those hydraulic wood splitters. One time my older brother was operating the lever and he was placing the logs. Ny brother went too early and the splitter nipped off the top of his finger. Like the entire part where his finger nail was. He didn't even say ow. Just held his hand tight to stop the bleeding. Told me to go get some duct tape from grandma. He wrapped it up and finished splitting the logs. Didn't even yell at him.

Grandpa was from the generation that would lose limbs in farm equipment.

Duct tape can seal an amazing amount of wounds

This is how to Dad. Good job Sir.

[ - ] AlexanderMorose13 1 point 10 monthsAug 15, 2024 21:48:29 ago (+1/-0)

Does being a good Dad come down to lessons and moments or does it come down to having a disciplined plan and being strict or stubborn?

[ - ] MaryXmas [op] 6 points 10 monthsAug 15, 2024 22:29:08 ago (+6/-0)

I think most dads are just trying their best. Not sure if they are good or just there. At least having a father around is a good thing. Some kids don't even have that.
I teach my kids things, I also set expectations and enforce them. Example- "Potty talk" means a time out. A minute is added for each refusal, this can get up to 5 or 6 minutes some times. However, if you are hard on a kid, they will become dispondant and lose their respect for you. That is why strong discipline is only effective if you have a great relationship. I expect a lot out of my boy, and I also spend a lot of time with him. Fixing things, doing projects, etc. I don't particularly like being strict, I am just doing the enforcement which is my job. I try my best to be flexible whenever possible.

[ - ] TheNoticing 1 point 10 monthsAug 16, 2024 10:34:46 ago (+1/-0)

How much do you expect? Are you talking about now or in the future? Do you plan on living vicariously through him, or will you support what he wants to do?

I ask because I existed as a kid. Never given expectations, never given instruction, never given help. For the love of everything, speak openly and honestly with him. I received "discipline" without knowing if I did anything wrong. Let him know why he's being disciplined and help him avoid it in the future.

[ - ] MaryXmas [op] 1 point 10 monthsAug 16, 2024 11:03:26 ago (+1/-0)

I am very clear on what expectations are and what he needs to do to meet expectations. I don't really care what he does, as long as he does it well with integrity.

My parents did that non-parenting crap. See, if I don't help you, you will figure it out on your own. Then you get older and still don't know basic things because they had never been taught. I didn't know how to start a lawnmower till I was in my mid 20s, that's unacceptable.

Discipline is a habit, trained over time, that one practices all their lives. Learning it from your father at a young age sets you up for success in life.

Discipline truly sets you free.

[ - ] TheNoticing 2 points 10 monthsAug 16, 2024 10:50:20 ago (+2/-0)

Going on my experience having a shitty father, it should be a combination, weighed far more towards lessons and moments than discipline. I was never taught anything by him so my views are heavily influenced by that. Having a pair of narcissists for parents is a big reason why I don't want kids. It's all I know and I have deep problems that having a lot of trouble working through.

Parenting is tough but I really like being a dad. More than I thought I would. You can do simple stuff and it really means the world to a kid. I love my kids.

There's a lot to be said for the 15 pound monster maul, if they still make those.

[ - ] canbot 0 points 10 monthsAug 16, 2024 02:36:05 ago (+0/-0)

Pretty lame that you didn't let him operate it. Maybe next time.

[ - ] MaryXmas [op] 0 points 10 monthsAug 16, 2024 06:32:33 ago (+0/-0)

He is only 3.

Never too early to start playing with big boy toys.

Is that why they took away your visitation rights?

[ - ] Drstrangestgov 0 points 10 monthsAug 16, 2024 01:22:06 ago (+0/-0)

When the carburetor is very clogged up with ethanol varnish you can poke a wire up through the jet which most often is the base of the fuel float bowl retaining banjo bolt. Also the ports in the side and bottom of the banjo bolt are important as side port is the fuel pickup from the float bowl. Be careful with your o-rings.

Honest question. I have a gas can full of 3 year old gas that I've been using in my lawnmower and it just keeps working every time I go to start it. Should I cut my losses now and find a way to dispose of the 8 gallon remaining - or just keep reusing this magical gas can until it stops working, or runs out?

What else would one do with gas?

[ - ] Drstrangestgov 2 points 10 monthsAug 16, 2024 01:29:14 ago (+2/-0)

Use it up if you can. It was probably stabilized ethanol free

[ - ] observation1 0 points 10 monthsAug 18, 2024 02:59:48 ago (+0/-0)*

I filled it up myself and didnt use a stabilizer. Should I add some? I'm sure it's not special gas. Just grabbed whatever 87. I'm kind of amazed the shit still works from everything I've been told.

OK I just did some calendar math and it's actually 5 years old. So I'm pretty sure it's magical gas by now. I know it's almost 6 years old because I filled it up for burning man in 2018, which was the last time I went. It's in a giant racing gas can, one ridiculously large, and never even got close to using it. I did ruin a generator carb once with it by letting the genny sit all winter with this gas in it, but that's another story.

How would you make it go away if you can't mow the lawn fast enough? For science, should I just keep running it since my mower is now in the insane realm? Like, do I call Guiness and report this?

[ - ] Drstrangestgov 1 point 10 monthsAug 18, 2024 08:39:39 ago (+1/-0)

I go through a lot of waste gas as I pull it out of machines that have been sitting. I have a little steel pot I put a few gallons at a time in and burn it off on the gravel. Like a smudge pot.

[ - ] Not_a_redfugee 2 points 10 monthsAug 16, 2024 01:53:10 ago (+2/-0)

Mower, lowish compression motor, will handle lower quality/less octane gas.

[ - ] observation1 0 points 10 monthsAug 18, 2024 03:01:22 ago (+0/-0)

It will take me 2 years to go through the rest gas at the rate I'm using it, is my other problem.

[ - ] Sector2 2 points 10 monthsAug 16, 2024 03:01:55 ago (+2/-0)

It's supposed to start going bad after a year or so. Continuing to use it would depend on how valuable your lawn mower is. 8 gallons is around 30 or 40 bucks, versus what would it take to unfuck your engine. Do you have a local immigrant shelter?

[ - ] observation1 0 points 10 monthsAug 18, 2024 02:51:55 ago (+0/-0)

Luckily no. The people who mow lawns around here are white kids looking to pick up cash.

Problem is I also dont know what to do with the gas except mix it with oil and paint wood.

Pour it on the sidewalk and wait for it to evaporate?

Carbs are becoming more rare these days. Good skill to still teach though.
