Value brands?

I used to always buy brand name shit. Detergent. Soap. Toilet paper. Even snacks and drinks. Just out of principle for the insane price increases. I started just buying value brand on household items. Still sticking with name brand on things like tires, tools, and spend extra on good meats. But tbh I really don't notice a huge difference any more. Other than price. In fact some of this cheap bullshit from aldi or store brands from target kroger and Walmart. Are as good and sometimes even better now. Yeah I took over shopping from my wife. She is horrible at it. Just comes home with a cart full of processed food and sweets. She grew up poor and didn't learn about healthy eating. Luckily for her she never gained any weight even after all the kids. She does eat like shit though. But she eats in moderation and exercises a lot. I got some fatties in my family, so I need to watch what I eat.

Your wife doesn't know how to shop because parents were poor. Her parents were stupid and lazy and she didn't figure out that it's way cheaper to buy staples. Staples are proteins like meat, fish, beans and poultry. Beans means dried. Fruit and vegetables are the second staple. The third is carbohydrates; potatoes, pasta and rice.

It's pretty simple. Nobody's snacking to fatness if everything has to be assembled and cooked, and she would learn how to think.

Well her dad was a preacher and her mom was a teacher. I wouldn't call them stupid. But they did live in Mississippi. Eating like shit there is basically like their culture. We never had sweets or junk food in the house when I was a kid. My mom cooked typical American breakfast of eggs toast and bacon. Would eat tortillas. Ham carrots. Unsweetened cheerios. Never had a thing fried in my life until I was like 20 and got married. Wife showed me you can deep fry food from home. Lol. Only hamburgers I ever had were even baked in the oven on one of those pans where the grease drops down. Anyway I would go to her parents to eat. They would have fried catfish. French fries and fried hushpuppies. As the whole meal lol. It was good though. They also taught me how to fry a turkey for Thanksgiving. That is the best thing ever. My wife is an amazing cook. Unfortunately none of it has health in mind. So I cook and shop now and she cooks on special occasions.

Animal fats are good for you. Nothing wrong with a greasy hamburger. The rest of that stuff was probably fried in seed oils. But would not be bad if cooked in lard.

Same. Q tips. Not changing. But tp paper towels we did. And don't regret. In fact great value brand paper towels are as good as brawny. Toilet paper I don't care about any more.

No. It's become obvious. Because people can observe huge differences in prices in a short amount of time. When you have been shopping for 20 years. And never noticed such a big change.

The grocery shrink ray employs lots of tricks. Size gets smaller, then they raise the price. Then they offer 20% more "free". You now get what you used to but with the higher price. Then the "new size" label goes away and then the price increases. Then it all repeats.

Each of these steps is so small that it's easy to miss. But they have been doing it constantly

Or we’ve been buying a half a cow every year. It’s a big cost up front but ends up saving you money as meat prices continue to skyrocket. It lasts my family about a year, is way better for you and tastes amazing. We get 50% ground beef and the rest is steaks, roasts, briskets, stew meat etc. I’ll never go back.

A typical family of 4 eats about 1 pound of meat for dinner. Let's assume he got 300 pounds of meat. That would last year or more assuming you eat other things sometimes. I got the 30 lbs of meat a month from butcher box. Didn't eat meat from anywhere else. Family of 5 at the moment. Still have some left.

How do you only eat 1 pound a day? And only at dinner? I used to eat a pound of meat in one sitting by myself easily. Now with kids and to stretch the dollar among other health reasons, I have cut down on meat but we still have about two pounds a day.
Although it’s not beef every day, we also have chicken, pork, bison, seafood, duck, and lamb. I’m seriously thinking of buying half a cow next year

We don’t eat the beef every night so between eating out occasionally, leftovers, cooking chicken or pork it lasts us two adults and kids about a year.

I started ordering from this company called butcher box. It's not the best for some items. But their ground meat is fantastic. Like their steaks are unimpressive. I just use them for chicken breast and thighs and ground meat. Their breakfast sausage is pretty good too. I wouldn't say I recommend them. I will probably go back to a butcher. I haven't done a detailed price comparison though.

I only buy from my local ranch and I have to say their meat is the best I’ve ever had. Their breakfast sausages are 10/10. The kids love it too. The steaks and roasts are out of this world. Even when the extended family comes over, they are blown away by the taste of the meat

I haven't seen. But I'm living it. Fortunately my wife is super skinny. But a couple of my kids started getting a little chunky from her bs. So I took over. They're all at completely healthy weights now.

I think value brands are fairly hit or miss, but I will admit that many value brand cleaners perform better than some name brands I've used.

As for food items, not so much. I tend to notice that many value brands have strange ingredients or copious amounts of sugar. Better brands are worth the extra few dollars if it has better ingredients imo. Then again, I tend to exclusively eat meat, cheese, and fresh veggies. The most dubious thing I buy is olive oil - you never know what concoction you're going to get.

I would encourage her to look at labels, and if there is a word or ingredient she can't pronounce or has no idea what it is and how it affects the body, then she likely shouldn't buy it. I grew up poor as well but eventually learned the way. Once she realizes how powerful a good diet is she won't look back.

Well, I work in a factory that makes food stuff. The difference between name brands and off brands is the label. They shut down the label machine when finished running one, change the labels in the label machine, and start running the next. That happens in every food factory I've ever been to.
