A single low-mid tier blue collar job could support a family of 4 not having a lavish lifestyle in the 70s, 80s and 90s depending on where you lived. My dad worked for broker-dealers when the stock market was the stock market. High 5-low 6 figure bonuses weren't unheard of for non-management.
