Seriously, that's just ridiculous. In certain times women's literacy wasn't a priority, but they were never not allowed to read. Keeping the Christian faith in a household was very much the mother's job, and she needed to know how to read the family Bible. Men's literacy was considered just as low a priority as women's literacy when they didn't need to know how to read, particularly with lower class families.
