I have a 15' canoe, definitely big enough for two adults, a dog, and a cooler.

I found a great deal on an Old Town Saranac 146 14.5 ft? Do you think that would be okay? It's a really nice canoe but it looks a little small?

Can you rent or borrow a canoe before having to decide?

That 14.5 footer looks fine for two people, but you'd probably want your dog to be really small. There's not much dog room in that image. But you'll have to consider the tradeoffs for greater weight and transportation issues for a larger one.

That's it. Yea it's a nice boat but too small. I have a ladder rack for my pickup so transporting is not an issue. Thanks!!!

ChatGPT:
A 16 to 17-foot canoe is generally the best size for two average adults and a medium dog. This size offers a good balance between stability, maneuverability, and carrying capacity, providing enough space for everyone to be comfortable without feeling cramped.

Here are some highly-rated and popular canoes that would work well for two adults and a medium dog:

1. Old Town Saranac 146 - A solid, stable canoe with plenty of space and features like contoured seats and extra storage, making it ideal for casual paddling or fishing. Available at REI.

2. Pelican Boat Intruder 12 - This is a fishing-focused canoe with lots of storage space and rod holders, making it perfect for calm waters. It's also very durable. Available on Amazon.

3. Aire Traveler Inflatable Canoe - A versatile inflatable canoe that offers excellent stability and can be easily transported. It's suitable for a range of activities, from fishing to mild whitewater adventures. Available at Backcountry.

These models offer a good balance of space, stability, and features for paddling with your dog. Make sure to check the weight capacity and dimensions to ensure it meets your specific needs【10†source】【11†source】【14†source】.

Thank you!

Yeah you need the big one to take a dog. It's gonna tense up and hang on an edge at some point, be ready.

Get a giant inflatable paddle board!

We know why you want the canoe.
Incorporating a dog into the act, might get you the blue ribbon for Best in Show.
Good Luck in the competition.

14 will be enough, assuming German Shepherd size dog.

The MORE water you displace, the more stable your craft becomes.

ie: Bigger is Better!

[ - ] canbot 2 points 9 monthsAug 28, 2024 18:06:47 ago (+2/-0)

What about a dinghy catamaran?

[ - ] mannerbund 3 points 9 monthsAug 28, 2024 18:35:16 ago (+3/-0)

Two kayaks with storage on them would be nice. The dog can fit on one, and misc gear (picnic food) can fit on the other kayak.

I always hated paddling with someone else, getting the timing right is annoying. Plus if it's just you or you and the dog, you can go out in a rig that's the right size still.

Outrigger?

[ - ] mannerbund 2 points 9 monthsAug 29, 2024 09:33:59 ago (+2/-0)

Nah, the open top kayaks have a fair chunk of storage and you stay maneuverable. I grew up with the enclosed ones where you had no storage, a spray skirt to keep water out, and down the rivers you went.

We are average size/weight adults

Average or normal weight? Because the average is obese. Not just fat, but fat+.

Either way, more displacement is more stability. So go with a larger size, big as you can comfortably move/transport around.

Make sure and get a good troll motor for those times. You'll thank me later

[ - ] ModernGuilt 2 points 9 monthsAug 28, 2024 21:01:59 ago (+2/-0)

We are average size/weight adults

So about 300lbs each? Get a pontoon boat

[ - ] beece 2 points 9 monthsAug 28, 2024 21:02:55 ago (+2/-0)

Get a light weight one. I had a Coleman that literally weighed 101 lbs. Wenaha makes one thats 40 or so lbs. Trust me on this, if it's just you loading it onto your car roof rack and you've been out all day, are beat and standing in mud, go for the 40lb'er.

[ - ] Puller_of_Noses 1 point 9 monthsAug 28, 2024 21:24:07 ago (+1/-0)

Two nigger bitches are crossing a bridge when one of them says Ah gots to take a piss. The other one says me too. So they hike up their skirts and start peeing into the river when the first one says, Gott dayum! Look at that canoe full of sliced meat down dere. The other one says, Sheeet, LaQuanda, dats just a reflection o'yo' coochie.

I've got a 2-seater fishing kayak which was great for my 35-lb dog and another person (of average weight). IDK how long it was but worked great in those situations.
