Found a table worth 2k but the surface is in this condition. How can i make this as good as it can be?

Sadly i think its gonna get noticeably sanded down. Then sold as a "used to be 2k table". Will get 400 from someone who thinks theyll get 750.

Edit: obviously YouTube is a better place for this but if I go to YouTube what do I get? Nigger commercials. Where does that get me? All pissed off

You can use a hot clothing iron and a tea towel/cloth to extract water rings out of poly. Go online and look for a good tutorial. The black stuff is another matter.

If it doesn't get noticeably sanded down, it's going to look exactly like that. If it's solid wood, sand it down and make it look brand new.

When I was a teenager, I would buy furniture at yard sales and clean it up and then resell it.
If this piece is part of a set, it's probably worth the trouble.
Mostly a bunch of sand paper and elbow grease.

Otherwise, if it's not part of a set, you probably won't sell it for as much as the trouble is worth.

It's a mid-century modern end table this stuff flies no matter what. I sure hope it looks normal after sanding. I guess the main question is will it look normal after sanding?

Start with 60 grit if the table has scratches, 80 if you just need to take off finish.
Then do a pass with 100.
Finish with 120.

Then a coat of lacqure.
Let dry.
Sand with 150.

Coat again.
180.
Coat.
220.

It will look great, but you will never sell it for any amount equaling the effort you put into it unless it belongs to a set.

Thats some intense refinishing master foo. I count the work as learning. Got the table for 10 so ending up with a finders fee is ok. Yeah having the matching table would be nice.

ProTip: Lane Acclaim was a mass produced furniture brand from the 60's, but the quality and wood was good.
Learn what it is and keep an eye out. They are easyish to still find.
It's easy to cobble together a "set" if you find a few stray pieces at a yard sale here and there.

But it's going to be stained at some point.
No sanding after it is stained

Dude just run a sander over it yourself and then put a finish on it.

[ - ] Dindu [op] 0 points 7 monthsSep 5, 2024 17:42:11 ago (+0/-0)

Is there a way to do it fairly unnoticeably? Is it going to be noticeable no matter what?

[ - ] Drstrangestgov 1 point 7 monthsSep 5, 2024 17:47:23 ago (+1/-0)

The finer the grit the smoother the finish. I've been using 600 grit on an orbital sander to do the finish on a table I'm building. Before I seal it I'll use 1000 grit.

Alright. Today i become a fine finisher

Maybe start out with "guy sanding a table", eh?

250 to 500 grit. Use your fingers, not a sander. A sander will make you finish the entire thing. Then spray lots of fine coats of poly spray paint. Don't use the brush poly because it will not get the final finish.

If you do it right it will look brand new, as long as it's actually solid wood and not a veneer. It may just be a bit difficult to try and match the color stain and finish used unless you redo the entire thing.
