They enjoy the violence and chaos. It is easy for them to understand. It is easy to be violent and they get validation from each other for it. It is the only validation they get, usually the only validation they could ever get because they are incapable of doing anything of value.

From our perspective their self imposed violence, squaller, and disfunction are a tragedy. From a more deliberative perspective those things are a crutch being used to ameliorate the endemic tragedies of their existence. Humans have a poorly understood need for things like social acceptance, companionship, relative success. When you put a group of people into an environment in which they can't keep up it puts an I credible amount of stress and pain on them. Seeing others succeed where they can't is destructive to their psyche.

This ultra violent culture gives them a community that they are capable of participating in, capable of comparing themselves to without always being in last place, and differentiate (have an identity) from those not willing to be as violent, aggressive, or tolerant of squaller.

The tragedy you see is the silver lining of an even worse underlying tragedy.
