I use an old recipe from my mom's Mary Margaret McBride 12 volume cookbook. I can't find the recipe at the moment, but this is pretty close to the ingredients.

3 cups all purpose flour i.e. White Lily Flour
5 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup cold unsalted butter or vegetable shortening
1 – 1 1/4 cup cold buttermilk
melted butter or heavy cream to brush the tops

The baking powder and baking soda are key for the right texture. I always use butter for everything. Buttermilk is indispensable.
